And if you like to power level fast, their multi targeting abilities scores them the best experience per hour rate in the game, making them scale up the level faster than most if not all classes.

The fair can be pretty much an appropriate place to feel depressed too, if you want to.

See? There's the reverse psychology on this. Everyone's joyful. You're not. Everyone's enjoying. You're probably hateful. And while the whole world moves when you don't, you feel like the outside.

Before your senses scream "EMO!"; it's a natural thing for us to feel depression when the world is happy. It means you're human. It means that you have conformed too much, and it's hurting you. When you hurt, it means you're human (again). So there's nothing to really worry about. And if you hurt more and more, that means you're being more of the human who you are. It doesn't mean you're weak because you feel anything, it means you're strong because you faced your emotions head on and are coming into a resolution with it.

The reason why fairs are a good place to be depressed is that it can slowly lift your spirits up without you knowing it. Sure, you might feel more contempted and would probably have despicable thoughts (woah, down boy!), but there would come a time when you would just shrug off all pretenses of having fun and just be yourself. Just be the kid you are once again.

Laughter is infectious. Once it spreads around, there's no stopping it (unless the source of the laughter was some crazy dude, then that's a whole different issue). Start with yourself, observe a kid laughing out because his dad bought him the balloon he had his eyes on, or maybe that couple enjoying themselves.

You are your own enemy. The path of happiness is oftentimes blocked by our own doubts and misgivings. When you learn to control and accept yourself, only then will you find happiness. And when happiness comes knocking in your door, do not hesitate to accept it.

The method of propagation by cuttings is basically simple, though naturally if undertaken wrongly poor results will be obtained.

Individual plants can be protected at planting time, but apart from this it will be as well to become resigned to losing the plants a little earlier than the luckier gardeners in more ideal sites.

Being a true perennial the dahlia may be propagated in several different ways other than by the primary one of raising from seed. In fact this natural method of increase is seldom used by the modern grower except for raising some of the bedding varieties, such as the single Coltness hybrids, or the double Charm hybrids and for the purpose of raising new varieties.

Ideally it should be at least 7 to 8 ft wide and 10 to 12 ft long, remembering that width is often more important than length, if economy has to be practised, as movement in a narrow greenhouse is so restricted. There should be a bench on either side, raised approximately to waist height, one side being reserved for setting up the tubers, the other side for the cuttings and plants as these are potted up.

The usual argument in favour is that the plant raised from a cutting has a completely fresh circulatory system, for no part of its nourishment is obtained via old tissue. As the divided tubers produce fresh stems from the crowns, and as fresh roots develop from these, it is doubtful whether this argument has much weight.

The tubers may be benched up from January onwards, although the average amateur will probably get sufficient plants as well as better results in a very small house, if this part of the procedure is delayed until the beginning to the middle of February. Before benching up, the sets of tubers should be carefully examined, removing any broken tubers with a very sharp knife, and cutting off any dried fibrous roots which remain.

Visitors should dress neatly and conservatively in all religious shrines. They should never go sleeveless, in shorts, midriff baring tops, or other unsuitable attire. It is acceptable to wear shoes when walking around the compound of a Buddhist temple, but not inside the chapel where the principal Buddha image is kept.

When visiting shrines, it's important to remember that these are religious sites, and not tourist attractions. Every image of Buddha is sacred, no matter the size or the condition. Never stand or sit on one. Never do anything that could be construed as disrespectful.Buddhist monks may not have physical contact with women, if a woman wants to hand something to a monk, she should do so through a man, or place it in his bowl. Don't hand anything to the monk directly.

Avoid commenting on the Royal Family. The Thais are protective and loyal to the ruling family, and treat them with deep respect. They are not a subject for levity in the way our politicians are.

In Thailand, almost everything in life involves a smile even blunders and mishaps. Westerners often mistake this for being laughed at. For example, if a waitress forgets an order and laughs, she is not showing contempt, just making the best of a bad situation. If you complain, do so gracefully, as anger usually gets you nowhere.

Don't be surprised if a Thai addresses you as 'Khun' or says 'Khun' before saying your name (for example: "Khun John". This is a courtesy. You may also notice that Thais always address someone by their first name.

Thais considered eye to eye contact impolite, and while generally not look directly into your eyes while speaking to you.

Don't touch a Thai on the head. And don't point your feet at anyone. It's considered very rude. Remove your shoes when entering a private home or temple.

Thais don't normally shake hands when they greet one another, but instead press the palms together in a prayer-like gesture called a Wai. If someone greet you with a Wai, it is polite to do the same in return.

A lowering temperature after nightfall with a bright starlit sky, following a fairly warm day, and an almost complete absence of wind, are all pointers to a sharp ground frost before dawn. This a radiation frost, an apt term, as the warm earth radiates heat into the cold upper air, in the form of water vapour, which condenses as cool air is drawn in to replace the heated air and the temperature at ground level gradually drops to freezing point. This is the principle by which nearly all refrigerators operate, so that the danger is obvious. For the same reason frosts are seldom, if ever, experienced in late spring on cloudy nights as the layer of cloud acts as an insulator, retaining the warm air at a lower level.

The Keeneland Sales at Lexington, Kentucky in July 1985 saw a group of sombre-faced Irishmen, accompanied by a big-spending syndicate headed by the pools heir Robert Sangster lift the bloodstock market to even headier heights when outbidding the Maktoum family of Dubai to pay $13.1 million for a son of Northern Dancer subsequently named Seattle Dancer. The colt was purchased on behalf of Coolmore, a stud operation just ten years old but already the largest and most internationally minded establishment in thoroughbred breeding.

In the mid 1970's Coolmore principal John Magnier had outlined his plans for the stud in a rare interview.

"If we keep stallions here and stand them very cheaply...in a short time we would be buying tenth-rate stallions " and when we went to the yearling sales nobody would want our produce," he said. "We have got to avail ourselves of the outside markets and stand stallions which will have international appeal as well."

That evening at Keeneland was all part of the masterplan for Coolmore devised by Magnier. Those that had known the tall imposing figure with a steely gaze from an early age never doubted that he was going to be a big success in life. Magnier was brought up at Grange Stud near Fermoy in the heart of the National Hunt breeding industry in Co Cork. Born on February 10 1948, and educated privately at Glenstal Abbey in Co Limerick, he left school aged 15 following the death of his father Tom.

He helped his mother Evie run Grange Sud, and farm visitors remember the young Magnier milking the family's dairy herd. The family had bred jumping horses since the 1850s and Grange Stud's stallions had included Cottage, the sire o Vincent O'Brien's triple Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Cottage Rake.

The O'Brien family from Churchtown and the Magniers went back a long way. Evie Magnier had been chief bridesmaid at Vincent's wedding in 1951, so it was very appropriate that, John married O'Brien's daughter Susan in 1975. The couple now have five children.

Vincent O'Brien is a successful breeder of long standing, and he said of Magnier: "He is a man of exceptional ability; he thinks big, deals shrewdly, and is most knowledgeable about bloodlines and everything to do with the stud business. John is so able I feel he would have reached the top of whatever profession he chose, and our very close association has been the greatest pleasure to me - it is a joy to work with someone of his calibre."

That admiration is mirrored, with Magnier saying of O'Brien: "Not only would I describe him as a great trainer - he is on a plane apart when it comes to breeding matters - Vincent can compete with anybody in buying on looks alone. He could, I am certain, pick a potential winner, even a future champion, without even looking at the pedigree. Nobody before Vincent, or likely to come after him, could ever match his knowledge of pedigrees and bloodlines. It's uncanny really."

After taking charge of Grange Stud, Magnier bought nearby Castle Hyde Stud to add to his portfolio and by the mid-1970s his operation was thriving. In Co Tipperary, Wing Commander Tim Vigors was developing Coolmore Stud, and in 1973 he invited Vincent O'Brien, whose Ballydoyle stable was just a few miles away, to became a partner.

O'Brien recruited Magnier, whom he regarded as "the most capable young man in Europe for the job", to manage Coolmore when Vigors, who was to drop out of the partnership following a divorce, wished to move out of Ireland. Magnier, via bloodstock agent Jack Doyle, had met Vernon's football pools heir Robert Sangster at Haydock in 1971 when in Britain to buy Green God to stand at Castle Hyde. Sangster, 12 years older than Magnier, was impressed by the young Irishman and supported Green God.

Both were ambitious and in 1975 the existing partnership of Vigors and O'Brien announced an amalgamation with Sangster and Magnier, to form an operation to be called Coolmore, Castle Hyde and Associated Studs. Gay O'Callaghan, who had run Castle Hyde Stud, helped manage the newly formed operation alongside Magnier, while other early members of the team included eventual general manager Bob Lanigan and former jockey Tommy Stack, as well as Magnier's brothers David, who continues to run the family's Grange Stud, and Peter.

The Coolmore philosophy, dreamt up by Magnier and put into practice through Sangster's wealth and O'Brien's training skills, was to buy into the hugely lucrative stallion market by acquiring potential sires either at the sales or produce them in the breeding shed. A number of other investors were involved and the partnership who owned the $13.1 million yearling, bought through British Bloodstock Agency director Joss Collins, was typical of the make-up of those at the time. Sangster and Coolmore took a 65 per cent stake, Greek shipping billionaire Stavros Niarchos had a quarter and wealthy San Francisco builder Danny Schwartz owned ten per cent.

Other investors in Coolmore syndicates included Alan Clore, son of wealthy financier Sir Charles Clore, Jack Mulcahy, the Irish-born American steel tycoon who had advised Vincent O'Brien to take a share in all his own horses, Paris-based Jean-Pierre Binet, Bob Fluor of the American-based Fluor Corporation, Swiss billionaire Walter Haefner, London insurance broker Charles St George, Scottish aristocrat Simon Fraser, Irish property developer Patrick Gallagher and Yorkshire-based David Aykroyd.

Vincent O'Brien had a trusted team of advisers with him at the sales, including his indispensible brother Phonsie, Coolmore's vet Bob Griffin, bloodstock agent Tom Cooper of the BBA's Irish division and colourful Californian agent Billy McDonald.

The sales team were entrusted with huge sums with which, effectively, to gamble on a mega scale. But Magnier's bold strategy was soon paying dividends. The first crop of sales purchases included the Derby winner The Minstrel, Eclipse winner Artaius and Be My Guest, who had been bought at Goffs for Ir127,000gns and will always be fondly remembered at Coolmore.

Having started covering for Ir5,000gns at Coolmore in 1978, his fee rose to Ir75,000gns as he was champion first-season sire and then, in 1982, Britain and Ireland's champion stallion. Be My Guest, who died aged 30 in 2004, is remembered at Coolmore - and at Goffs - by a life-sized bronze.

There were many other outstanding results on the racecourse or at stud in the early years of Coolmore from such greats as Sadler's Wells, bred by Sangster's Swettenham Stud out of a mare bought as a yearling at Keeneland, El Gran Senor, Be My Guest's son Assert, Alleged, Storm Bird, Golden Fleece, Fairy King and Caerleon. These set down the foundations of a bloodstock empire that has continued to grow and while many of the main players, both human and equine, may no longer be around, John Magnier's Coolmore is still a breeding operation without parallel.

Apart from the pompon, the show and fancy, the cactus and the decorative forms, several other types of formation are recognised, although none is as popular.

Certainly they developed quite naturally from the paeony-flowered varieties, which had comparatively flat petals, but as the ball dahlia was evolved from much the same parentage, other blood must have been introduced. For the ball dahlia only the smaller varieties would have been used, but for the decorative and the cactus varieties the larger forms of pacony-flowered dahlias were used with increasing success, until at the present clay we have dahlias of both formations ranging from under 3 to 15 in. and more in diameter.

The division between the decorative and the cactus dahlias has never been very clear. At one time the exhibition cactus was the very finely quilled type only. Variations from this were known as garden or hybrid cactus and this term included many blooms which we would classify today as decorative. Later, the National Dahlia Society divided cactus dahlias into two classes.

Paeony-flowered dahlias has semi-double blooms of several rows of ray florets surrounding a central disc. This class is divided by size into large, medium and small flowered varieties. Decorative dahlias have fully double flowers, which do not show a central disc until very late in the life of the bloom. The ray florets are broad, more or less flat, and bluntly pointed, with little twist to the petal.

The native name given to the plant was Acocotli or Cocoxochtl, from the hollow stems which resemble water pipes, but it was renamed "Dahlia" in honour of Dr Andreas Dahl, a famous Swedish botanist, by the Abbe Cavanillas when the dahlia was introduced into Europe. The name Georgina was at one time also used, but this has been superseded.

This a short list of the movies released this year (2008). I have chosen a few of the films I enjoyed watching this year. I'm sure that you can find a couple of movies that are good viewing.

Jumper: During a near death experience, David Rice discovers something incredible. He now knows he can actually teleport himself to anywhere he desires to be, anytime he wants. Later, he becomes aware that there are others with this skill. Unfortunately, after a few years of fun, he learns that there are people that are trying to rid the world of jumpers. He must fight for his life, as those people want him dead.

BOLT: Bolt: This movie is an animated family comedy. Bolt, is a dog who is an actor, who plays the role of a dog that is a super hero dog. His problem is that he really thinks he is this super hero dog with superpowers. When, by chance, he is put into a real life situation, he discovers that he is just a dog. Needing to find his way home, he is aided by Mittens, the cat, and Rhino, the hamster.

THE CHRONICALS OF NARNIA, PRINCE CASPIAN: It is one year later, in their normal lives when, the four saviors of Narnia, Lucy, Susan, Peter, and Edmund are teleported back to Narnia. Prince Caspian has blown Susan's magic horn, hoping to be saved. 100's of years have passed since they left Narnia, but they now return to save Narnia from the evil Telmarines. With the support of the bravest in the forest, including, a dwarf, the centaurs, and a very skilled mouse, they will fight for the future of Narnia.

WANTED: Wesley Gibson is about to learn that his father, who he never really knew, is an assassin. His father is killed, and now he is being recruited into the organization that his father was a part of. He is transformed from a nobody office worker into the assassin that he was meant to be. After that, everything becomes very complex and twisted. Enjoy this roller coaster ride.

THE DARK KNIGHT: In this film Batman, and Lt. Gordon and D.A. Harvey Dent, have been taking down the criminal elements of the city. Crime is now down, that is until the Joker shows up, and things get a lot worse. Batman has his work cut out him now, as the Joker is dispensing an overwhelming assault on Gotham City.

TWENTY ONE: This movie tells an amazing true story of young college kids who formed a team of blackjack players that beat the casinos. These wiz kids planned, trained, and executed a brilliant run at the blackjack tables. To play in Las Vegas, where players can be banned for winning with card counting skills, they created false identities, and used complex signals to avoid detection. Twenty One is based on the book that tells how the M.I.T. teams made millions playing blackjack.

10,000 B.C.: This film will take you back to prehistoric times. When a warlike tribe storm the Yaghai people, they ride off with some of the people, including the lovely Evolet. A young hunter named D'Leh, who is in love with her, leads a group of hunters to pursue the warlords, and save her, and the rest of the captured tribe members.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS: It was a wild night in Las Vegas. Barely remembering what had happened, Jack and Joy wake up to discover that they are married. They wind up winning a large jackpot at the slot machines, but each thinks they deserve the prize, so they try to settle it in court. The strange ruling is that for the next few months they must stay together, and try to make their marriage work. With an eye on the jackpot, they conspire to make each other quit the marriage, as they are both determined to wind up with all the money.

WALL-E: This film is a science fiction adventure in animation. Mankind has left Earth, since it had become a pile of rubbish. Wall-E, a trash collecting robot, is assigned to continue cleaning. When Eve, another robot, arrives looking for signs of life on Earth, Wall-E is finally not alone. Eventually, when Eve is recovered by the craft that sent her, Wall-E somehow get on the ship, and starts an incredible adventure.

Dahlia Soil

Light sandy soils are usually lacking in humus, and by virtue of the lack of humus, and in consequence of the porous nature of the soil itself, are also lacking in moisture retaining properties. Because of these disadvantages, added humus forming materials and mineral salts are not retained as well as in heavy soils; nitrates in particular are soon exhausted.

The addition of bulky humus forming materials on a generous scale over a period of years will go far towards rectifying these difficulties by gradually binding the soil together. At least such soils are usually well drained.

However, though bulky material is essential, it is inadvisable to incorporate this early in the winter. Any available animal the ground after Christmas, never before; in fact on light ground it is really best to retain as much manure as possible for the provision of a mulch in July.

It will sometimes happen that one part of the garden forms a frost pocket. Usually this occurs at the lowest point of the garden, often against a solid fence or wall, and this particular position should not be chosen for the dahlia bed if another, more suitable, site is available.

If the ground on which the dahlias are to be grown has been under grass or weeds for any length of time it is extremely likely that it is infested with various soil pests. The action of frost will eliminate some, particularly if the soil is turned up very roughly in big lumps, but it will be as well to dress the whole plot with horticultural naphthalene. It should be applied at the rate of 2 ounces a square yard. Alternatively the soil should be dressed, immediately prior to planting, with gammexane dust (sometimes sold as lindane or under a trade name incorporating the descriptive "gamma B.H.C."), which is particularly effective.

Therefore, if a solid barrier, such as a close boarded fence or even one constructed from wattle hurdles, is erected on the side from which the frost tends to come, and the fence on the lower side of the garden is constructed of more open material, there is a strong possibility that frost damage will be minimised as the low, ground frosts, which are the dangerous ones to dahlias just planted, will tend to pile up on the outer side of the close boarded fence, while the frost that develops inside the garden will flow through the open fence to a lower level.

Grafting and Budding

Another method of increasing certain shrubs and their garden varieties is grafting and budding, where part of the plant to be propagated, either a graft or a bud, is transferred and attached to well-rooted stock of a common species. For some shrubs and fruits this is practically the only and most reliable means of propagation (tea roses, lilac, magnolia, apples and pears).

Another method of vegetative propagation is budding, a form of grafting used for roses, lilacs, medlars, hawthorns and other woody plants. The best time for this is summer (from late June till mid-September). A well-developed bud with a piece of leaf stalk and shield of bark is cut from the plant to be propagated.

A T-shaped incision is made in the bark of the stock and the bud is then slipped between the bark and bud usually remains dormant throughout the autumn and winter and does not start growing until the following spring. However, a percentage of early budded roses begin growing as soon as the bud is united.

The finest and most abundant display of flowers are borne by shrubs that have ample young wood. Shrubs left untended rejuvenate themselves by throwing out new shoots from the base and it is therefore necessary to aid them in this process. Pruning should not be left until too late so as to prevent the need of removing wood that is very old, for the shortening of strong thick branches mars the shrub's overall appearance.

Several different forms of grafting are used in the propagation of shrubs. The simplest is whip or tongue grafting, employed where the stock and scion are of similar thickness. With this method the scion, cut downward at an angle, is placed against the stock, cut at a corresponding angle to the scion.

Slit or notch grafting is used when the diameter of the stock is several times greater than that of the graft. With this method a wedge-shaped incision is made in the stock and the scion, cut at an angle corresponding with that of the wedge-shaped incision, is fitted into the stock. It is also possible to merely make a straight cut in the stock and spread the tips apart to receive the scion.

When it comes to saltwater fishing, I would say that the sunny state of Florida takes the crown. There are many types of fish that are biting all year round because of the warm water. Some of the main attractions for fishermen are the Florida Keys, the everglades, and Fort Lauderdale.

Florida fishing offers you all kinds of game fish to catch both inshore and even more if you plan on fishing offshore. Some of the great game fish that you can get while fishing inshore are snook, redfish, sea trout, flounder, mangrove snapper, and sheepshead. You do not necessarily need a boat in Florida to fill up your cooler with some delicious fish.

Not everyone has the luxury to fish from a boat, no worries though because Florida has hundreds of fishing piers that offer excellent fishing. Some of these fishing piers may charge a fee to fish from and others like the Fort Desoto piers, are free of charge.

Surf fishing also provides excellent fishing if the conditions are right. Some of the conditions that I consider to be good are if there are rocks, and not many people swimming around. Also it is best to fish from the beach when the water is not extremely choppy.

Dock fishing is also great in Florida, if there is an inlet by the dock then you are sure to see some snook around there. Sheepshead also love swimming around docks, and they will be anywhere that has barnacles.

Another option for fishing inshore in Florida would be bridge fishing, just make sure that you are allowed to first as some bridges do not allow you to fish from them. One excellent bridge to fish from is the old Sunshine Skyway, which is between Saint Petersburg and Tampa.

So if you thought that you needed a boat to catch fish in Florida, you can think again. I have had great success inshore fishing in Florida fishing from all of the types of structures that I have mentioned in this article.

Dahlia Plot

Should the dahlia plot be an island site, with paths all round so that it may be seen from several sides, it will naturally have to be planned rather differently; the colour grouping will still be necessary, but the taller plants will have to be placed in the centre with the shorter plants graduating down on all sides to the pathways.

Wide borders are naturally much easier to plan, as a graduation from a 6 ft back row down to dwarf bedding varieties or low growing pompons at the front is possible, but even narrow borders, in which a double row is the maximum, can be very pleasant to look at.

From the point of colour alone it should be obvious that the dahlia plot will look far more attractive if the colours are grouped in an orderly manner, whether by blending or by carefully planned contrasts.

One of the first things to be done, once it is known how many plants are available of each variety, is to make a rough plan of the border, or borders, giving consideration to height, colour, type and size of flower and planting distance.

If this plan is adopted it is best to plant in groups of three to six dahlias, again carefully chosen as to height, putting a block of taller varieties at the back of the border, with dwarfer perennials - not too dwarf of course - in front; or a group of varieties of medium height, in front of tall perennials such as the rudbeckias and so on.

The variations on this theme are unlimited. Do allow ample space for the dahlias, for they are big bushy plants which do not enjoy being brought too closely into contact with other kinds of flowers, even if they will tolerate having to share the same bed.

Casting John Reilly and Will Ferrell as the key players; It seems to be a great recipe for a funny movie. This movie is a sure fire bet if you?re looking for some laughs.

HAMLET 2: Unsuccessful actor Dana Marshz has settled into teaching the high school theater classes to uninspired high school kids. When they lose a building at the campus, the school board figures the theatre program will get the axe. Now fully motivated, he is determined to save the program by producing Hamlet 2, a sequel to the original work, which he put to paper himself.

TROPIC THUNDER: Overloaded with good actors we find ourselves watching a parody of recent war movies. Things are going bad, so to get the over rated cast of actors to create a quality war film, the desperate director into the wild jungle, leaving them to fend for themselves. The goal is to overwhelm them so they will produce a work of genius, which will be caught on hidden cameras in the area. Catching Monster Redfish in Texas

Jeff and I went fishing today. We were trying to do some stretching and pre-fishing for the tough competition Texas trout series which will happen on this weekend. We both found fishing at this spot very tough this time. What saved our day was the Devil Eyes lures that we brought along.

The first place we waded (a place I waded the previous day that had action) was pretty dead except for one lonely mullet that only mildly hopped. Jeff was the first to get a solid bite on an Amber Devil Eye w/ 1/4 oz TruLoc but no take. I then got a hook-up but it was short lived and I reeled in an empty Amber. A few minutes later I got a true hook-up on an 18 inch speck. No more bites later and we were on our way to spot number two.

Jeff and I went to the second spot which was a cleaner one. I decided to put on a Dark Strawberry Blue Devil Eye while Jeff was pulling the white stink bait he had. We both jumped out of the boat with our lures and we looked for better hook-ups but there was nothing for both of us on this spot.

Then we reached a certain spot where the boat was necessary to get us to the other side. Jeff was always on the go so he brought the boat to the spot and we waded to the other side.

We continued wading through the deep water to the other side. We checked for the right spot by measuring the depth through a rod. Then we were able to find a spot and I tried casting a lure and got myself a fat redfish. Shortly, I saw Jeff casting his Devil Eyes and he got one too. After some time we both got some more redfish.

Jeff and I used the Devil Eyes at 10-11 o'clock triple bounce with 5 second pauses on every cast. We both can say that if you find the fishing is tough on certain areas or spots, it would be your advantage if you have Devil Eyes and use it to hook up those redfish.

Practically all other double flowered varieties will give excellent blooms if treated in similar fashion to the small clecoratives, with the exception of one or two varieties in which have comparatively large blooms-Andries Wonder is an example; this variety will produce blooms up to it in. in diameter and should be treated accordingly as a giant decorative or cactus.

Bedding varieties, quite naturally, are grown unrestricted. It must he pointed out, that although the foregoing has been in the main given for the benefit of the exhibitor, the same principles may be applied when dahlias are grown for garden decoration alone.

This is particularly so with the giant varieties, because, after all, there is little point in growing these varieties unless the blooms are big; if smaller blooms are required then varieties which naturally produce bloom of lesser size should be grown. For garden decoration it is not necessary to restrict to the same degree.

The application of cold water brings the temperature of the plant back very slowly over freezing point and minimises the effect of the expansion. If, despite spraying, it is obvious that the plants have been damaged, it is as well to cut away the frosted portions at the first available moment, as the break down of tissue may continue and affect the whole plant so badly that it will die. This may mean that practically all growth above ground level has to be removed, but even in this extreme case it is probable that the plant will produce fresh growth from a dormant eye below ground level and will eventually make a perfectly good plant produced from four to six pairs of good strong leaves or when the plant has reached a height of approximately to to 12 in.; this does not preclude stopping very forward plants whilst still in the frame, particularly when these have been grown in very large pots, or directly in the soil in the frame.

This practice is a common one in the more northerly counties. In addition to stopping the plant to induce early flowering it is usual, particularly when grown for exhibition, to restrict the number of branches that each will bear in order that perfection of bloom may be achieved.

This control may not be particularly essential in the smaller flowered varieties, which produce blooms in fairly quick succession, but is a great value to the exhibitor of the giant blooms.

This method is really only suitable for the raising of single and semi-double bedding varieties. It is probably the finest as well as the cheapest method of raising these types. Seed of the taller fully- double varieties will give disappointing results, as the majority will be only semi-double and of nondescript form, quite unsuitable for garden decoration.

The cheap wooden handled knives sold as cobblers' knives are particularly suitable for the job as they have a straight cutting edge with an angled point, as well as being strong and so capable of standing up to the strain of dividing tough material.

There is one other method of increasing dahlia stock worth mentioning, the primary one in fact, though mentioned last because of its limited value, and that is by seed. This is a comparatively simple matter as the dahlia is no harder to raise from seed than any half hardy annual and it will flower the same year.

The seeds should be sown in pots or boxes in early March, spaced fairly well apart as nearly every seed will germinate, covering the seeds with approximately one eighth of an inch of soil.

The important thing to remember is that the leafy growths are not produced from either the tuber or the old stem, but from the fleshy extensions of the stem, intermediate between stem and tuber, which is known as the "crown".

They may be pricked out either individually into small pots or into boxes spaced about 21- to 3 in. apart in all directions. Growth from this point onwards is usually rapid and the seedlings should then be treated in the same fashion as the cuttings. At all stages the most suitable soil compost is undoubtedly John Innes No. 1 potting.

They are used fresh or, dried to flavour soups, salads, pies, stuffings for fatty meats, poultry, game and especially veal.

Besides varieties with thick roots there is also a variety C.i. foliosum which is grown as a vegetable for use in salads: It is forced during the winter in sand in a dark cellar, or in a frame covered to exclude all light, for chicon production.

After cutting off the stalks the leaf blades should be dried at a moderate temperature in a well-ventilated place. The dry leaves are then crumbled or ground and stored in air-tight containers. Because the foliage is highly aromatic it should be used sparingly.

Roasted, ground chicory root and chicory salad also have medicinal properties. Both promote the flow of bile and aid digestion. The roots of wild chicory are used for the same purpose in pharmaceutical preparations. Wild chicory is nowadays distributed throughout Europe, north Africa and in Asia as far as Lake Baikal; however, it is not known where it originated.

THE DARK KNIGHT: In this film Batman, and law enforcement officials, have been taking down the criminal elements of the city. Crime is now down, that is until the Joker shows up, and things get a lot worse. Batman is in a battle now, as the Joker has unleashed his criminal plots on the big city.

TROPIC THUNDER: With an abundance of acting talent this film is a spoof on Vietnam war movies. Things are going bad, so to get the over rated cast of actors to make a true epic masterpiece, the desperate director into the jungle, and leaves them on their own. He hopes to overwhelm them so they will produce a work of genius that will be recorded on hidden cameras. Unbelievably, as the director blows up on an old French land mine, the spoiled actors are on their own, and they are convinced everything is just an act, but the bullets flying are actually real. This is a great cast with incredible make -p for Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise.

STEP BROTHERS: Two forty year old child adults, who each live with their single parents, are going to share a room because their mom and dad get married, you can only imagine the mess. With Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as the key players, and you have the ingredients for a raucous comedy. This film is a sure fire bet for comedy lovers.

Wild Thyme

These are then dried in bunches hung in a well-ventilated spot, at a temperature not exceeding 35C (95F) like all plants containing volatile oil. Like garden thyme, wild thyme has a pleasant spicy aroma and slightly bitter taste. In cookery it is used the same as garden thyme.

Wild thyme is best distinguished from garden thyme by the flowers, which are stalked and arranged in dense panicles, whereas those of garden thyme are arranged in cymes.

Wild thyme also flowers for a longer period than garden thyme and is thus excellent as a food source for bees.

Garden thyme is a sub-shrub growing up to 30 cm (1 ft) high, whereas wild thyme is a creeping perennial herb (serpyllum is derived from the Greek word 'herpyllos', meaning creeping). Finally the main component of wild thyme oil is cymol, not thymol.

Excessive alkalinity and acidity are disadvantages, but as both can be minimised quite easily, neither can be considered as prohibiting the growth of dahlias.

Double show and Fancy dahlias (why the term double is still retained is somewhat of a mystery-except that there used to be a single show at one time) have fully double, almost globular, flowers, with central florets like the outer, but somewhat smaller. The florets are incurved at the margin, tubular and blunt at the mouth.

Pompon dahlias are exactly like double show and fancy dahlias except that they are smaller. Divided into three groups: Large (over 3 in. but usually less than 4 in.), Medium (over 2 in. but usually less than 3 in.) and Small (less than 2 in.).

Although these ideal conditions will not be available to many gardeners the site and soil nearest approximating to them must be chosen, and, if really good results are desired, an attempt made by careful culture to minimise the natural disadvantages.

Finally there are the dwarf bedding dahlias. The plants must not exceed 24 in. in height but the formation of the flower may belong to any group.

Although these are the main groupings at present, there is no doubt that this classification will not remain unchanged for long as the dahlia exhibits new variations in form each year, some of which will ultimately have to be recognised. For example, there are an increasing number of cactus varieties in which the tips of the petals are laciniated, in many cases quite deeply. These frilled or lacy varieties are at present handicapped in competition against the more normal varieties, so that if the number increases it may well be advisable to institute a separate class for such varieties.

There are displays of katana drawing (shinkendo), spear play (naginata jutsu), and fencing (kendo). Hopefully, by the next few festivals, they could include other forms of weaponry like the Japanese bow, or those cool ninja stars and sickle-chains. I have always wondered about those ever since I was a wee little.

For the kids, there is the cosplay (kosupure) or costume play, held by the local comics organization. While the older folks can have a hand with the weapons, the kids can do well with their favorite anime characters coming to life (made by fans, for fans).

The event lasts for two days, but each hour is packed with enough culture to make you go Japanese. It's highly organized, and the publicity is good. Tourists in Arizona are welcome to join in the festivities, if not for the sights and then at least for the sounds. I'm sure everyone will love it.

Dahlia Information

Like a great many other flowers in the garden the dahlia is a member of the natural order of the Compositae, a family which ranges from the lowly daisy of the fields to the majestic flower about which this book is written. More accurately it is included in a sub-order of the Compositae, the Helianthoid eae, along with the sunflower and the aster.

The soil in which it grows is sandy and yet rich so that although the great demand for water is met by the heavy rainfall the fleshy tubers are not endangered by boggy conditions as excess moisture quickly drains away.

The individual florets are separated by scales (bracteoles) which serve as calyces for the protection of the seed case (the ovary). These remain on the flower head after the florets have been removed or have dried out, closing round the developing seed to form a protective sheath.

Even as it is, dahlias will occasionally survive the winter if left in the ground, but this can hardly be recommended as a general practice. The tubers are designed to resist drought, but not the damp coldness of our soils during winter.

Doubling in the dahlia is not of recent origin as it is evident that at least one species, D. Variabilis, produced some semi-double blooms naturally. It is not surprising therefore that shortly after its introduction into Europe fully double dahlias were raised. The earliest had more or less flat florets and from these evolved the ball-shaped formal blooms which were to exclude practically all other forms for many years. A later variant had short tubular florets incurving at the margin: the forerunner of the Double Show and Fancy and the pompons still widely grown today.

Some revulsion against the intense formality of the globular dahlias later became apparent, and for some years interest declined until the introduction of a new factor brought renewed life. This was the advent about 1890 of seedlings from D. Juarqii, an almost sterile hybrid with loosely arranged, somewhat pointed florets: representative of a type that had been bred practically out of existence.

WANTED: Wesley Gibson is about to learn that the father he never knew, is a contract killer. When his father is killed, Wesley is basically forced into the organization that his dead father was involved with. He is asked to become the professional killer that that he was destined to become. From there, things get extremely complicated. Enjoy this roller coaster ride.

THE CHRONICALS OF NARNIA, PRINCE CASPIAN: Just one year has passed in there "regular" lives, when Edmund, Peter, Susan, and Lucy are mysteriously pulled back into Narnia. Prince Caspian has blownn Susan's magic horn, in a desparate plea for help. In their one year at home, centuries have passed in Narnia, but they now return to battle for the freedom of Narnia once again. With the aid of the best fighters in the Narnia, including a very brave mouse, they battle to free Narnia.

Jumper: While almost drowning, David realizes he has an unbelievable ability. He has the ability to teleport himself anywhere, anytime. He then comes to learn that there are others with this skill. After years of "jumping" around the planet, he is exposed to hunters that think jumpers are a threat, and need to be eliminated. He now must battle for his life, as the hunters try to track him down.

WALL-E: This picture is an animation comedy. Mankind has left Earth, since it had become a pile of rubbish. Wall-E, a robot built to remove trash, has been left behind to clean up the planet. When Eve, another robot, arrives looking for signs of life on Earth, Wall-E is finally not alone. Eventually, when Eve is recovered by the craft that sent her, Wall-E stows away, and starts an incredible adventure.

BOLT: Bolt: This movie is an animated comedy. Bolt is a dog actor, who plays the role of a dog that has super hero dog powers. The thing about Bolt is that he honestly believes he has superpowers. After he is unexpectedly put into a real life situation, he discovers that he is only a normal dog. On a journey to get back home, he is helped by a cat named Mittens, and an overweight hampster named Rhino.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS: I guess it was a typical night out in Vegas. Young partiers Joy and Jack wake up and soon realize that they had married each other the night before. They wind up winning a large jackpot at the slot machines, but there is a debate on who gets the money, so they try to settle it in court. The strange ruling is that for the next few months they must stay together, and give their marriage a chance. With lots of money at stake, they each try to get the other to give up, as both desire to have the cash for themselves.

TWENTY ONE: The basis for this film is the true story about M.I.T. students who created a winning formula to beat blackjack. This team of blackjack players learned to beat the game, and then performed a brilliant run at the blackjack tables. To be successfull in Las Vegas, where players can be banned for winning with card counting skills, they created false identities, and used complex signals to avoid detection. Twenty One is based on the book that tells how the M.I.T. teams made millions playing blackjack.

THE DARK KNIGHT: Batman, along with Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, have been taking down the criminal elements of the city. This has effectively reduced crime, but now a new super criminal arrives on the scene, and attacks the city. Batman is in a battle now, as criminal mastermind, the Joker, has released his criminal insanity on Gotham City.

These days just about everyone buys or rents these movies, so they can see them in the comfort of their living rooms. A more recent method for getting films is by using down loading technologies off websites. There are websites that with a membership, you can download virtually any movie ever made.

The very word 'barbeque' commands great respect and effect that it leaves most stomachs growling, and mouths watering when their thoughts fly off to a sight of hot, steamy, juicy, and sauce-laden, meaty goodness...broiled perfectly in slow-charcoal heat and browned to perfection. Texas has extensive knowledge with barbeques, after all, the Lone Star state is known for its love of anything meat.

Barbeque is very much different from grilling or broiling. It is the unique way of cooking over fire by indirect heat (either coal or wood). Because it is indirectly cooked, the flavor and aroma tends to develop and contributes to the overall taste of the meat.

Texas barbeques are unique from other barbeques, and can be easily recognized by several of its traits. Firstly, meat often used wouldn't be chicken or pork, but beef; since the state is less hostile to the growth of cows. That and beef is a manly meat. Although there's not much of the sexual discrimination there, the tougher the meat is, the more exciting it is for the Texan gastronomist.

Wax Museums

At this moment, most people actually do opt to visit wax museums out of sheer curiosity, wonder and probably, shock, amusement and bewilderment. Welcome to the Hollywood Wax Museum.

Centered right smack on Hollywood Boulevard lies the wax museum in its stately, old-world, glory. The admission is well over ten dollars, but you be the judge as to whether it is worth your money or not. The portion where it lacks a souvenir shop is a bit disheartening, however.

As the Hollywood Wax Museum is aptly named, most of the subjects concerned and immortalized are that of those with famous (and almost famous) Hollywood stars in their most famous shows and in their famous roles. Most of the wax figures are those of nineteenth century actors, featuring nineteenth century films I doubt your son or daughter knows. Try asking your son about MASH and he might look at you like some Neanderthal.

Then again, perhaps that would be a good time to immerse your brood in the old culture of Hollywood, when Stallone was still 'da bomb' or when Sharon Stone was the talk of the town (admit it, she's not the 'it' thing for almost a decade now). There's a lot of things to be learned from this simple tour (not necessarily things you have to know, but just things that you should know because it's just...there). There's also the Baywatch crew, probably the more familiar for the kiddies out there (mainly because of the recent scandal caused by Hasselhoff regarding his medications).

If you have the time to spend, to splurge on history, then why not give the place a visit? It may not be a Taussad Wax House, but it surely comes close to it. There are other museums nearby that might lift your interest too, like the Believe it or Not museum just around the corner.

Arriving In Las Vegas

Make sure before you leave for Las Vegas you know what you need to do when you get there. The airport is very busy and hecktic. Several of the airlines operate there. I would always make arrangements ahead of time for a pickup and only carry on my luggage. Also if you do take a cab know how to save on it. If you do want to rent a car you need to know how to save on that also.

When you are booking your flight to go to Las Vegas it is advisable to go ahead and book airport transportation. I don't know of any hotels in Las Vegas that offer an airport shuttle. You can get a privately owned shuttle for less than $15 per person round trip. You will need to make these arrangements before you leave. This is the best way to get from the airport in Las Vegas to the property you have booked. You can also catch a cab or take a bus, but they are less convenient.

I also recommend if at all possible pack light so you can take just a carry on. Sometimes, especially during peak times, it can take a long time to get your checked baggage. Plus you have to pay a fortune anymore just to check a bag. If you can carry your luggage with you it saves a lot of time, and makes your trip longer.

If for some reason you do decide that you are just going to take a cab, tell your driver not to take the tunnel. You really have to choose here between time and money. If they do not take the tunnel you are going to pay less, but if traffic is heavy you are going to be slowed down. When they do take the tunnel they will charge you more. The decision is what is more important, time or money.

If you decide to rent a car, Fox Rent-a-Cars is the best way to go. They are not on the grounds of the airport, but they will shuttle you to their location. You can save a lot of money doing this over renting at the airport. I strongly suggest you do not rent a car though, it is a lot easier to get around Vegas with public transportation. You dont have to worry about parking, etc. Plus everything is so close together that it really is a waste to drive.

When you are going to Vegas make sure you have a plan on how to reach your hotel from the airport. Advance planning will pad your pocketbook. I say arrange for a shuttle and carry on your luggage. This will save you both time and money.

Snow Festival

Okay, I was intrigued as to why we had a "Snow" festival when the thing was but a common sight when it was winter time. Shouldn't we have a rain fair then or something?

This year, they had settled to celebrating snow. That minuscule, white ice crystal. I don't think the town had gone conkers quite yet, but seeing this was the first time, I indulged myself to the little celebration. It was a cold town to begin with, so I had it would be quite natural for us to celebrate something we had plenty of.

The festival had no brand yet, except for the fact that it was indeed, snow-themed. The people were were quite excited frankly, even though I assumed that they would be just freezing their bottoms off after the fair. They had everything planned quite well enough.

In the first day, they were going with just the usual calm day of displaying stuff and being off with their business. They were off in their booths selling either food (the winter rice cake was a treat to the tongue, the wine was something of another matter). There were makeshift igloos too, and a warm fire inside; it was kind of daunting to be inside, but when you've been there, you would know it's actually quite comfy.

The second day marked off a town snowball fight. It was very, very invigorating to say the least. They had, like, people do stuff you would only find in military games. They had the melee people who crept up another and slid snow down their pants (not a very good thing mind you), the snipers who propelled balls a few feet away, and the support, who made the snowballs for everyone.

The last day had the big bonfire. Everyone was warm and fine, and everyone felt content. I had felt that it wasn't the snow that made everyone happy, but just because everyone was there.

It was more of a celebration of life than of the snow.

When your plants begin to grow, you will need to prune them every once and a while. Shears will work well for this especially for bushes. You can use them to keep bushes from over growing and keep them healthy.

There are a few other basic tools you will find useful such as a gardening hose, wheelbarrow, circle hoe, extra soil, fertilizer, etc. If you have a small garden, you can use a watering can, but a hose will be much easier and more efficient for larger gardens.

A wheelbarrow isn't absolutely necessary, but you will find it very useful for yard work in general. A circle hoe can help you weed our garden because it can get in the smaller spaces. These tools can help you maintain a beautiful healthy garden.

Planting Deciduous Shrubs

The common osier is a shrub growing from 2-6 m in height with stout, flexible, greenish-yellow stems tipped with silky hairs. The alternate buds are elongate, flat and coloured greenish brown. As in all species of willow they are covered by a single, cap-like scale. The dioecious flowers appear before the leaves at the end of March. The male flowers have two stamens. The capsules split to release the seeds at the end of May. It sprouts prolifically when pollarded and is propagated by cuttings.

Native shrubs, their ornamental forms and above all related and established exotic species offer a wide selection from which to choose those suited for various sites and locations and for various purposes. Besides the standard shrubs from 1 to 3 m high, there are small or dwarf sorts of up to only 40-60 cm, especially well suited for the rock or heath garden. There are also .shrubs that are practically small trees with their height of 5-7 m.

Long and shoots and cut back the thicker ones. This should always be done with a sharp knife or secateurs, so that the cut is clean and smooth. The top growth of evergreen shrubs planted out with a ball of earth is not cut back. To ensure that the shrub will become well established it is advisable to add peat, compost, or well decayed manure and to water well after planting.

The colour of the flowers is another important aspect and the choice is wide, ranging from white through yellow, pink, red, and blue to violet. Size also is variable, ranging from the practically indiscernible greenish blooms of Hippophae rhamnoides to the large showy flowers of Magnolia and Rhododendron. Other shrubs with unobtrusive flowers are loveliest in the autumn, when they are covered with bright ornamental fruits - Cotoneaster, , Pyracantha, Hippophae, etc.

This shrub grows wild throughout most of Europe, extending across Russia to Siberia. It is a typical inhabitant of wet and boggy locations with acid soil. It is found not only in swampy alder groves at lowland elevations, but also in marshy meadows in the foothills and mountains, even at elevations above 1000 m. In woodlands it grows in ditches alongside forest paths, in locations with a high level of underground water and in peat bogs.

Shrubs that are exceptionally attractive because of their habit of growth, flowers or fruits should be planted as solitary specimens in the turf or in front of a hedge of evergreen or deciduous shrubs (Exochorda, Cotinus, Cotoneaster, Viburnum carlesii, etc.).

Tips on Drawing a Garden Plan

Some idea of the type of garden you want may already be beginning to form in your mind. Before you start to translate your thoughts on to paper, make a rough but accurate survey of the garden.

If you have ever consulted an architect to extend your house you may already have a plan available, or a small site plan may be attached to the deeds of the house; any architectural drawing shop will enlarge this to scale for a small fee. But if you do not have a plan, the procedure for measuring up the garden is fairly straightforward.

The terrace will be the centre of the garden in terms of activity. How much space you give to it will obviously depend on the size and shape of your garden, the size of your family and your particular requirements. For sitting space, however, an absolute minimum width of two metres (a little over 6 ft) is necessary. Especially in summer, the terrace may be in constant use for sitting, visual link between indoors and outdoors, leading the eye out to a view of the garden eating out, sunbathing, children's play, preparing food and doing any number of odd tasks. The diversity of activities which it is likely to sustain often calls for a sunny, sheltered place which is not overlooked.

One way to ensure privacy is to make a pergola to sit under, or even string wires across the width of the garden to create a real outside room. Attractive plants, such as vines or clematis, can be grown over wire or a pergola. Planting will also muffle the sound of noisy neighbours.

Triangulation is a simple met of plotting accurately the post of various elements in your garden. To establish the distance from the house or boundary, example, measure the distance from two separate points on the house or boundary. To mark is the position of the tree on your map, use a pair of compasses to draw arcs from the two points. with radius corresponding to the two measured distances reduced scale. Clove

Clove is the dried flower bud of a tropical evergreen tree, native of the Moluccas, which reaches a height of 20 m (65 ft). It was known in the Far East and in India in ancient times and was shipped from there by the Chinese as far back as 400 B.C. For centuries it was used to alleviate toothache and also to sweeten the breath.

It is the seeds of this perennial plant that are used as a spice. It is native to southern India and Sri Lanka and also raised nowadays in Central America, particularly in Guatemala. Cardamom is used mostly by the peoples who grow it as is also the case with many other herbs and spices.

The first European to see the tree growing in its native land was the Venetian merchant Marco Polo in the 13th century. When Vasco da Gama discovered the Molucca Islands the Arabian monopoly was replaced by the Portuguese and in the 17th century by the Dutch. Up until the turn of the 18th century the entire world was supplied with cloves only from the Moluccas.

The seeds of rocket are rich in oil (30%) and this is the main reason for which it is raised nowadays. The oil is obtained by pressing; it has a golden yellow colour and after being stored for several months loses its sharp, biting quality.

This is how the spice is sold on the market, the seeds being removed from the capsules just before use. These seeds have a sweetish, but spicy flavour. The cardamom herb spices are often supplied to shops in powdered form, which is quite unsuitable for the aroma is rapidly lost.

Cloves contain a large quantity of an essential oil that is very aromatic but loses its aroma with long storage. A good way of testing the quality is to put the spice in water; if it is of good quality it will sink or else float upright, stale cloves float flat on the surface. They are used either whole or ground to flavour sweet dishes and pastries, also in meat dishes, marinated fish. The oil has a medicinal value in that it stimulates the appetite and aids digestion; because of its high content of eugenol, it also has an antiseptic effect.

Meadow Mushroom

The meadow mushroom, or champignon, is the first edible mushroom to be cultivated by man, and it soon became a lucrative product first on a small and later on a large, industrial scale. Credit for this goes to the 17th-century French botanist Marchant and the Parisian nurserymen of that day who grew melons in frames based on horse manure. Such an environment is also perfect for mushrooms; not only for the growth of mycelium but also for the development of the fruiting bodies.

The first mushrooms harvested from these frames developed from chance spores carried there by the wind from neighbouring fields. The frames were covered for the winter to retain the heat generated by the gradual decomposition of the horse manure and the mushrooms were harvested successively throughout the winter.

When Marchant succeeded in discovering how mushrooms multiplied, their cultivation no longer needed to be left to chance. Nowadays, when mushrooms are becoming increasingly scarce in fields and meadows because of the spread of intensive farming, fully mechanized, large-scale mushroom-growing plants provide many more times the amount than could be collected in the wild.

Mushrooms are not only a popular food that is low in calories, but also a delicate seasoning for soups, omelettes, meats and sauces. Young meadow mushrooms may be pickled and used in salads or served with roast meat, sausages or salami.

The sobriety of the early 19th century, marked by a preference for Biedermeier sweets eaten while sipping coffee or chocolate, was replaced at the end of the century by a newly revived interest in the cookery of distant lands. Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and other restaurants sprang up in Paris, London and other major European cities and have remained popular and successful to this day.

Mugwort is a perennial herb reaching a height of up to 1.5 m (5 ft) and growing wild in a number of similar forms throughout the northern hemisphere - from the Mediterranean to Lapland, from India to Siberia, and from Mexico to Alaska. Hence the Latin name vulgaris, meaning common or widespread. It is grown mainly in the Balkan Peninsula, Italy, France and the former USSR.

It is also found in western Asia and North America. If it does not grow wild nearby, it can be readily grown in the garden, either from seed or from young shoots detached and replanted during the flowering period. The top parts of the herb, either fresh or dried, have a number of uses. Drying must proceed slowly, at a temperature no greater than 35C (95F).

If it is to be used as seasoning then the tips of the young shoots must be harvested before the small flower-heads open. The reason for this is that the amount of bitter principles rapidly increases during flowering, thus making the plant unsuitable for use as a culinary herb. The shoots are best dried tied into bunches and hung up in a well-ventilated place. The dried herb retains its pleasant aroma for a long time if stored in air-tight containers.

In France it is the custom to add woodruff to champagne, whereas in Switzerland to cognac or Benedictine. In the United States it is used in making a May punch consisting of a mixture of wine, brandy and Benedictine. In northern Europe woodruff is used to flavour certain kinds of sausages and salamis.

Nowadays it is a relatively rare shrub in the wild because it is a host plant of one stage of the life cycle of grain rust (Puccinia graminis) and thus not welcomed by farmers in the vicinity of grain fields, where it is systematically eradicated. This will doubtless soon lead to the disappearance of its sour, pleasantly astringent berries, which are used, the same as rowanberries, to flavour compotes and tarts, as well as piquant sauces for game and roast beef.

The renowned Hortus sonitatis of medieval days recommends sweet woodruff for the treatment of all illnesses caused by heat' because 'drops of clew remain long !won this plant'. The dried top parts were already used in those days to give garments in the wardrobe a pleasant fragrance and continue to be used for that purpose to this day.

The plant kingdom is divided by botanists into categories called taxons. On the basis of their mutual relationship plants are divided into phyla, classes, orders and families in that order (these basic taxons are often divided further into subgroups). The family to which a plant belongs is a very important category in the classification of plants.

The snowberry is a native of North America, where it grows on dry and stony banks from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. It was introduced into Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century and is now a common shrub there, becoming well naturalized in many places.

Every plant has a scientific, Latinized name composed of two words. The first denotes the name of the genus to which it belongs and the second the species. Every plant family takes its name from the generic name of one of its members. Thus, for example, all species of the genus Allium (onion, garlic, chives, leek) belong to the Liliaceae family because their basic characteristics are similar to those of lilies (genus Lilium); thyme, sage, rosemary, oregano, basil, peppermint, balm, marjoram and hyssop, together with dead-nettle (genus Lamium), to the Lamiaceae family; clove and allspice are related to myrtle (Myrtaceae family); turmeric and cardamom to ginger (Zingiberaceae family), and so on.

The smallest and lowest taxonomic unit, designating very closely related plants of the same species, is the subspecies, sometimes also called variety. Garden forms bred and cultivated by man to better meet his needs, but not found growing in the wild, are called cultivars.

Another important group of substances found in some herbs (wormwood, hops, chicory) are the so-called bitter principles. These are substances of varied chemical composition but with one characteristic in common - their strong bitter taste. Bitter herbs are also effective in aiding digestion as they promote the flow of digestive juices.

The pleasant astringent taste of other herbs (nettle, rose hip) is caused by the presence of tannins. Unlike essential oils, bitter principles and tannins are soluble in water and do not vaporize when heated.

Where space is restricted, the design of that space becomes all-important. Many of the elements which make up the design of today's small garden have historical antecedents, while the number of old gardens which actually remain indicates that they have stood the test of time visually and as places for use.

The Romans carried vegetable growing much further in their country homes because it was the main form of sustenance for rich and poor alike. Salad crops were grown and cabbage was said to be the favourite vegetable. Cato also wrote of turnips, beans, garlic, asparagus and radishes and later writers added carrots, onions, peas, lettuce, chicory, parsley, fennel, parsnips and melons. When the Romans went as conquerors to Europe, they introduced various plants, vegetables and fruit to different countries, together with their knowledge of agriculture and horticulture.

The earliest recorded gardens, seen in Egypt about 3000 BC, were sun-rounded by a mud wall to absorb some of the sun's heat. The house was also within this square or rectangular enclosure. The formal layout of early gardens was necessitated by the need for irrigation channels to provide water in a hot, dry climate. These divided the garden into geometric areas and, in the grander gardens, the irrigation channels became formal pools with fish and there were arbours to sit under, overhung with vines, and shade-giving palms. The Egyptians grew onions, which were their staple diet, and other vegetables and herbs for their medicinal value.

Enclosed gardens gradually reappeared on a small scale at the end of the Dark Ages, within the confines of monasteries and fortified buildings.

Fruit trees were cultivated, including peach, apple, cherry, banana, date, fig and olive. The Persians also grew flowers such as poppies, lilies, chrysanthemums, narcissi and roses in formal beds between the stylized cruciform shape of the water canals. The idea of a flowering paradise within a formal setting is captured in Persian writings, painted miniatures and woven into carpet patterns.

The Indian and later the Moorish garden evolved from the Persian glorieta. Water was the essential thread of continuity, weaving through and linking different planted areas, while creating a cooling effect. The Moorish influence stretched along the whole of north Africa, into Sicily and southern Italy and thence to the Sierra Nevada in southern Spain. The style and form of the garden remained much the same, enclosed by buildings and high walls to provide shade and privacy. They were designed for outdoor living while remaining within the confines of the house.

Black Mustard Herb

The seeds of black mustard are prepared the same as those of white mustard (Sinapsis alba) to make a paste used as a condiment. Black mustard was known to most of the ancient peoples, who grew it as a vegetable and medicinal herb. Native to the eastern Mediterranean region, it was introduced to Europe by the Romans and is nowadays cultivated chiefly in England, the Netherlands, Romania, Italy and France, though not in such great quantities as white mustard.

The seeds of black mustard are brown to black and measure about 1.5 mm in diameter. They contain a large amount of oil used by the food industry. Prepared mustard is made by first pressing the oil from the seeds, then grinding the remains, or 'mustard cake', to a powder and blending it with liquid - grape juice in the case of prime-quality prepared mustards, otherwise vinegar or even plain water. The characteristic flavour of the various commercial kinds is determined by the other spices that are added to the mixture.

As everyone will agree food is enjoyed not only for its flavour and aroma but also for its visual appeal. Calendulin is soluble in fats, so if used to colour dough, marigold must first be boiled in milk.

As seasoning it is added to pickled gherkins and vegetables, to spinach and cabbage, mayonnaise, cold sauces and salads. It is also used to make herb butter, herb cream, cheeses and yogurt. It gives a refreshing cucumber flavour to iced fruit cups. It is also good with braised meat and fish dishes to which it is added just before serving. In Liguria (northern Italy) it is used as a filling for ravioli. The flowers are used to add aroma to vinegars.

The fresh buds are unpleasantly bitter but drying destroys their pungent flavour. For this reason they arc preserved by salting or better still by pickling in a vinegar solution. Most products are obtained from cultivated shrubs, grown chiefly in southern France, Spain, Italy and north Africa. Plantations are renewed after fifteen years, when the yield from aging shrubs begins to decline.

They must be dried rapidly in shade to preserve the colour for this fades when exposed to sunlight. The dried flowers should be stored in a dark, dry, well-ventilated place or in air-tight containers. To this day the flowers are used by the pharmaceutical industry in antispasmodics and in preparations promoting the healing of wounds

The scale and shapes of a garden pattern link the garden to the house and surroundings as much as the materials used. Now consider the interior of your house; it will, of course, be dictated by family use as well as aesthetic considerations.

It is equally important that the style of the garden is in keeping with the inside if the house and garden are to be seen as a whole. Not only does the house lead out to the garden and thus form a unit in the physical sense but the garden can usually be seen from the windows of the house and should harmonize with the interior as much as possible.

The essential elements of Japanese design are stone and rocks, earth, sand and water, each used with a precise consideration of scale and balance. There is a restrained and very selective use of plants and blossoming fruit trees. Originally each element had a mystical significance though now the aesthetic effect is equally if not more important. In a country where space is strictly limited, the Japanese designers exploit the beauty and dramatic significance of every resource. Their lessons are particularly significant for present-day small gardens everywhere.

In very broad terms, the rustic effect of country-style furnishings would call for a garden with a sweep of lawn and planting in herbaceous borders while a sophisticated modern interior will he complemented by a more streamlined type of garden with a stronger use of plant materials, concrete and cobble.

Traditionalists will want a gentle, harmonious layout, with perhaps stone, soft curves and a glint of water. Many other types of house, such as the summer hous retreat, the seaside villa and the town house all have particular characteristics which call for a particular style of garden.

The character of any particular region, town or village will have developed partly from the materials available at any one time and the way in which it was possible to put these together. The village is in this sense organic, in that it springs from the ground of which it was made and therefore has an inherent fitness. Look at the older buildings in your area which will probably be in the local material (the parish church is when a good guide to materials and how they were used, both inside and out). The local material is usually the cheapest and, if not available new, can often be bought second-hand. Many areas have no local rock, in which case the construction traditionally would be in wood or where clay was available in brick, though today more and more houses are built of concrete. Introducing an alien material into an area may also affect the scale of your design.

Soy bean is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. It is native to southeast Asia and China where it has been raised from as far back as 3000 B.C., which makes it all the more remarkable that Europe, where it was introduced as a curiosity in the late 18th century, showed no interest in it until the 19th.

The dried and ground roots are used for flavouring, or better still the extract from these roots, sometimes thickened to syrup-like consistency so it will not spoil and can be stored. Licorice was made famous by the town of Pontefract in East Yorkshire, where it was raised and processed commercially before the town became an industrial centre.

Pontefract cakes and other sweets from licorice are made there to this day, but from imported, not home-grown roots. The liquid extract may also be used in making delicate sweet drinks and to disguise the unpleasant taste of some drugs. In Victorian times it was the custom to eat licorice every Friday as a purgative.

In the Middle Ages fennel had all sorts of uses. The fruits were used to flavour sweets, fish sauces and soups. It was recommended for the treatment of cataracts, worms in the cars, and to promote the flow of milk from the breast. The following recipe is for 'cold brewit': 'take mush made from almonds, dry it on a cloth and when dry put it in a vessel; to this add salt, sugar, the white powder of ginger and juice from fennel.

Fennel is generally grown as a biennial. The seeds - double achenes - are sown outdoors in the open in July. If properly tended plants may yield seeds for three to four successive years.

The roots are dug up in the autumn of the third year, washed, peeled and dried slowly. They are sweet and have a characteristic but faint smell. Licorice can be grown in your herb garden and be used as spices to give delicious tastes to your food. You can grow licorice herb to decorate your garden and make it beautiful.

Ginger, with its tall leafy stems up to 1.2 m (4 ft) high, somewhat resembles a reed. The flower stems are about 25 cm (10 in) tall.

The flowers are large and coloured pale green; each opens for a single day and can be pollinated by one kind of bee found only in Mexico. Thanks to this small bee, Mexico maintained its monopoly on the export of vanilla for 300 years up until the 19th century. It was known to the Aztecs, who used it to flavour cocoa long before the discovery of America by Europeans.

Nowadays, it is raised not only in Mexico but elsewhere, chiefly in Madagascar, for it can be pollinated by artificial means. It is propagated by cuttings and trained up artificial supports or small trees. It begins to bear fruits in the third year. These are 16-to 30-cm-(6- to 12-in-) long pod ;like capsules (known as vanilla pods) which are harvested while still immature so they do not burst.

Dried, ripe grapes, available in shops in the form of raisins, sultanas and currants are also used as flavouring in cookery. Raisins are the dried fruit of a small dark seeded grape whereas sultanas and currants are seedless. They are added to sweet yeast dough to make buns and fruit breads, and cream-cheese fillings as well as to sweet sauces served with meat.

In England ginger has been a traditional spice since the 9th century, but Europeans were not acquainted with the plant itself until the late 13th century when it was described at almost the same time by both Marco Polo and Pagolotti. In the 16th century Francisco de Mendoza of Spain began cultivating ginger in Jamaica. Chief producers nowadays are Jamaica, southeast India, tropical west Africa and China.

Nowadays, synthetically produced vanillin is often used instead of vanilla; it is cheaper and more convenient. The aroma of genuine vanilla, however, cannot be matched because it is the result of the natural balance of vanillin and small quantities of other aromatic components contained in the pods.

Garden Drainage

Garden compost, formed from rotted down vegetable waste, is an excellent substitute as it returns to the soil all the materials taken out during plant growth and helps to improve the soil structure. It is a simple and economical matter to make a compost heap in the garden but careful thought should he given to the siting of it. Though it is preferable to place it out of full view, it should not be anywhere too damp or shady or the waste matter will not rot down correctly.

Dig a hole about 1 m (3 ft) square and at least I m (3 ft) deep; it should be sufficiently deep to penetrate the impervious subsoil into something more porous below. Fill the hole first with brick or other large, hard rubble to a depth of about 600 mm (2 ft), then with about 100 mm (4 in) of gravel or ash. Finally fill with excavated topsoil up to ground level.

Each 300 mm (1 ft) layer of waste should be trodden or pressed down firmly to get rid of air pockets, and then watered. The compacted mass can be covered with a layer of soil, about 25 mm (1 in) thick, and then the farmyard manure or sulphate of ammonia if you arc using it. Alternate layers can be covered with hydrated lime (unless your soil is naturally limy) instead. When the heap is the height you require, cover it with one more layer of soil and give it a watering. Decomposition will be speeded up if the heap is turned about every six weeks, moving waste matter from the outside into the centre and watering any dry patches. In the absence of rain, water should be sprinkled on the heap periodically-about every two weeks during a dry summer. Too much rain, however, will wash away the nutrients in the compost; during a period of heavy rainfall, a temporary cover could be placed on top.

Any measures taken to improve texture and fertility of the soil will help overcome drainage problems. Digging aerate a clay soil, and mixing in bulk, organic matter (such as peat, compost strawy manure or dead bracken) we below the surface will improve its texture The addition of inorganic materials such gritty sand, weathered ashes or gypsu: (calcium sulphate) will also make a clay soil more open in texture. As a rough guid allow a bucketful of organic matter and tw of inorganic for each square metre or square yard of ground.

Lime will make a clay soil more porous by breaking it up into crumb-like particles. A simple container will ensure that your compost is kept in a tidy heap. The open wire structure and the honeycomb pattern of bricks allow air to pass through, which is essential if the bacteria are to do their work of breaking down the waste material. A slatted wooden structure would be equally effective.

Very bad drainage conditions may be indicated by permanent standing water but check first that this is not just a high water table. If you conclude that the drainage is totally inadequate you will need to lay a system of underground pipes running to a soakaway, placed preferably at the lowest point in your garden.

Purslane

The spice known as long pepper is obtained from two species of plants: one is Piper longum from India and the other is Piper officinarum from the Sunda Islands, Philippines and Moluccas. In both instances the dried unripe berries are used as seasoning. They are more pungent than black pepper and, unlike black pepper, form joined, compact fruits resembling hard, black catkins up to 5 cm (2 in) long.

The only peoples that use it are those living in warmer climates (it is used in the same way as black pepper). In the past it was more highly prized and much more in demand than nowadays.

The Latin word 'piper' then gave rise to the common names used in the various European languages, e. g. pepper, Pfeffer, poiNire. Long pepper played a remarkably important role in European trade in the Middle Ages.

The name `piperarii', a medieval term applied to successful merchants, was used in this sense up until modern times. Nowadays, however, long pepper is cultivated and used mostly in India, the Far East and the Pacific region. Indians add it to curry and to a mixture called pipel.

The strong biting quality of cubeb is not caused by piperine, as in black pepper, but by cubebine and by the large amount of essential oil they contain (as much as 12% whereas black pepper contains 4% at the most).

The specific composition of the essential oil together with the resin present in the spice gives pepper cubeb its characteristic camphor-like aroma. Pepper Cubeb can be used in cooking as spice. It also has a nice aroma. Pepper cubeb can be grown in any free space in the garden.

Alpenrose is a densely branched, evergreen shrub growing to a height of 0.4-1 m. The glowing flowers appear in June and July. The capsules ripen and split at the end of September.

This shrub is a native of the Alps, mainly the eastern part, its range extending westward only to Switzerland. It grows from 1200-2500 m in open woodlands and the dwarf pine belt. It is more plentiful on limestone and dolomite slopes. It is a popular shrub for rock gardens, parks and gardens. Also found in the Alps is the closely related species Rhododendron ferrugineum L., which grows farther west, to the French Alps and the Pyrenees, and unlike R. hirsutum has no preference for calcareous soils, growing above the tree line in stands of dwarf pine on siliceous soil. It attains a height of 1 m; the leaves are densely covered with rust-coloured hairs below and the flowers are a darker, pinkish red.

The cornelian cherry is a shrub or small tree with a thin but widespreading crown growing to a height of 3-7 m. The yellow-brown bark on older shoots breaks up into scales. One-year shoots arc slender, erect, green or tinged with violet. The leaf buds arc lanceolate, opposite, and stand out slightly from the twig. The flower buds are round (the size of a pea) and easily distinguished from the leaf buds. The flowers appear before the leaves in March.

The fruits ripen in September; they are edible but turn sweet only after the first frost. Inside the pulp is a hard, elongate seed which, when sown, does not germinate until the second year.

This species is widespread in southern, central, western and eastern Europe, extending north to the Baltic Sea. It thrives well on rich, calcareous soils and is most abundant in lowlands in the valleys of rivers and streams though it is also found in the foothills up to heights of 600-700 m. It appears to thrive quite well even in drier soils as evidenced by its occurrence in drier situations in oak stands. A shade-tolerant species, it is found not only on the edges of woods and in hedgerows, but also in mixed broadleaved woods.

Propagation is by means of seeds and root cuttings. The leaves turn a bright red in autumn. The wood is hard and reddish.

Eventually, when Eve is recovered by the craft that sent her, Wall-E somehow get on the ship, and starts an incredible adventure.

HAMLET 2: Unsuccessful actor Dana Marshz has moved on to teaching the high school after classes to students who just don't care. When they lose a building at the campus, the school administration feels that the after curriculum will get the axe. Wanting to fight, he sets out to keep the school from dropping his classes by producing Hamlet 2, a new version of the classic, which he creates.

WANTED: A young, bored, office worker named Wesley discovers that his father, who he never really knew, is a contract killer. His father has been murdered, now Wesley is asked to join into the organization that his father was a part of. He is transformed from a nobody office worker into the killing expert that he was meant to be. From that point on, this movie gets complicated, and many twist and turns follow. Enjoy this roller coaster ride.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS: Heavy pot smoker Dale Denton, in a stroke of bad luck, has seen a bad cop, and the local drug king pin, murder someone. The killers know he has seen what's gone down. Knowing they've seen him, he drops his joint of pineapple express, and takes off. This joint is such a unique type of weed, that it is possible to find out who has it. The "fun" is on, as Dale and his dealer Saul are desperately hiding from the bad guys.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS: I guess it was a typical night out in Vegas. Joy and Jack, who had just met, wake up to discover that they are married. When they win a $3 million jackpot, each thinks they deserve the prize, so they try to settle it in court. The judge decides that they must stay together for six months, and see if they can settle their differences. With an eye on the jackpot, they each try to get the other to give up, as both desire to get the money for themselves.

After fertilization the ovary ripens into the fruit, its outer layer forming the wall or pericarp with one or more seeds inside. The seed is the fertilized ripened ovule and consists of the embryo and nutritive tissue enclosed in a hard cover.

They are bisexual, having both stamens and pistil (e.g. rose, bladdernut, cornelian cherry, dogwood), or unisexual, having only the male or female organ or one of the two atrophied (e.g. willow, mistletoe and sea buckthorn).

The nut is a hard-shelled fruit with a woody wall not connected with the seed, e.g. that of the hazel and smoke tree. The legume or pod is a one-celled, flattened, usually elongate fruit, splitting along the margins when ripe, with several seeds inside, e.g. the golden rain, pea tree and common broom.

Shrubs growing beneath trees have very poor chances of being pollinated by the wind and are usually pollinated by insects. Their flowers therefore often have bright colours and strong fragrance in order to attract insects.

Fleshy fruits do not split when ripe but drop from the parent plant in their entirety or else break up into parts with enclosed seeds. One such fruit is the drupe, which has a pericarp consisting of three layers, namely the thin epicarp or outer layer, fleshy mesocarp or middle layer and hard bony endocarp or inner layer that is the stone, usually encasing a single seed. Examples are the blackthorn, English holly, cornelian cherry, dogwood, etc.

Another fleshy fruit is the berry, with a thin membranous covering and fleshy middle and inner layer with usually several seeds embedded in the pulpy mass, e.g. the currant, privet, common elder. Accessory fruits include the pome and the hip. The pome develops from the fusion of the fleshy receptacle and ovary wall. It is a fleshy fruit consisting of a central core containing several seeds and an outer thickened fleshy layer. Examples are the cotoneaster, hawthorn, quince, medlar and crab apple. The hip is a multiple fruit consisting of a fleshy hollow receptacle enclosing several achenes.

Very little development in gardens took place in Europe for several centuries following the end of the Roman Empire. It is thought that knowledge of horticulture virtually died out and only those plants which managed to naturalize themselves survived. However it is known that leeks, cabbages and dried beans and peas formed some sort of subsistence diet throughout this time.

During the sixteenth century the initiative passed to Rome, where the architect Bramante designed a papal garden within the Vatican. This was the forerunner of the High Renaissance style, with a magnificent arrangement of steps and terraces, which became a prototype for everything which followed. From then on gardens became even more ostentatious in design, with terraces at different levels retained by walls and interconnected by grand staircases. Water again became a major feature, as it was in Islamic gardens. It was pressurized and used spectacularly, progressing down an incline or displayed in an elaborate fountain. While these Renaissance gardens were still places for cool retreat, with shade and water of great importance, they were also showplaces where the site and its vegetation were deliberately manipulated. The Italians were really the first to make decorative use of plants, with hedges, for example, used to link the house and garden structurally. The Renaissance movement originating in Italy spread northwards, together with increased knowledge about plants and their cultivation. In France the small formal gardens within the walls of mowed chateaux moved outside, becoming much grander in scope.

The Greeks discovered the delights of Persian culture, including their paradise gardens, when they were waging war in Asia during the third century BC. During the first century BC we also hear of influential Greeks having vegetables planted in their gardens, to furnish their tables. Homer wrote of Alcinous' large walled garden which grew vegetables, including beans, with an orchard of apple, pear and fig trees.

As times became more peaceful throughout Europe the defence walls were lowered, the garden area grew larger and a simple formal design developed.

Parterres were both larger in scale and more intricate in detail than earlier knot gardens. Another distinctive characteristic was the hedge- lined avenues which fanned out through the surrounding forest known as patter d'oi (goose feet). Le I\16tre was appointed royal gardener to Louis XIV and the garden at Versailles is probably his best known creation. In concept it was a vast outdoor drawing room, intended for the entertainment of a court of thousands.

The Romans carried vegetable growing much further in their country homes because it was the main form of sustenance for rich and poor alike. Salad crops were grown and cabbage was said to be the favourite vegetable. Cato also wrote of turnips, beans, garlic, asparagus and radishes and later writers added carrots, onions, peas, lettuce, chicory, parsley, fennel, parsnips and melons. When the Romans went as conquerors to Europe, they introduced various plants, vegetables and fruit to different countries, together with their knowledge of agriculture and horticulture.

The quality of the soil can usually be improved, but light and heat depend on the geographical location. However, when planning the herb garden always choose a warm, sunny and sheltered place, so the plants are provided with conditions at least somewhat like those of their native habitat. They will reward you by growing well and developing flavour and aroma.

Every soil, even the best, deteriorates after a time for its fertility is depleted by the growth of the plants. Extra nutrients should therefore be provided every year or so by applying a proprietary balanced fertilizer. Take care not to overdo it, however, for generous feeding will lead to lush growth at the cost of development of flavour and aroma. One more thing - most herbs are lime-loving plants and if the soil is deficient in lime, this, too, should be added by digging it into the soil in the winter. Do not, however, apply lime and well-rotted manure or compost at the same time. Most herbs are propagated from seed. In the case of annual and biennial herbs this is the only possible method. Seeds are usually sown in spring, after all danger of frost is past, either directly in the ground where they are to grow (the seedlings are then thinned to the required spacing) or in trays or pots.

Knowledge of the characteristics of aromatic substances is extremely useful to the modern cook. What happens to herbs and spices when they are added to food? In the preparation of cold dishes it is a simple matter, for there is no need to fear that the aroma will evaporate together with water during the cooking process.

There is naturally no universal rule for growing herbs. Each has its specific requirements and each thrives in different conditions. However most of the herbs listed above can be grown together in the small garden if provided with good garden soil and sufficient water, light and heat.

Quite the opposite is true in the case of cooked foods. Here herbs are generally added shortly before the end of cooking (in the case of stewing, braising or roasting), particularly in the case of fatty foods, or just before the food is served.

Hydroponics is gaining in popularity nowadays. This is the method of growing plants in a nutrient solution instead of soil, and is particularly suitable for growing house plants as it eliminates the need of daily watering. It can also he used successfully for growing many herbs. All that is needed is an opaque container of suitable size and shape and a mixture of mineral salts, obtainable from most garden centres. Cumin resembles caraway, with which it is closely related, in aroma and flavour, but it is much more pungent and quite bitter. In olden times it was more highly prized than caraway, as testified to by the fact that, according to the Bible, the Pharisees paid their tithes with it and even in medieval England vassals used it to pay the feudal lords in lieu of their services. It was also well known to the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians, who used it in place of pepper.

Its fruits were put in graves together with other gifts for the dead. Theophrastus tells us that cumin was grown for culinary use and advises that sowing of the seeds be accompanied by cursing to ward off evil spirits, which would otherwise damage the germinating plants. On old Egyptian papyrus rolls it goes by the name of `tapnen'.

In the Middle Ages cumin was a culinary herb of the aristocracy, popular mainly for seasoning poultry. It was believed to destroy gases and other foul things in the stomach.

One medieval dish called `Comminee de Poulaille' consisted of chicken cooked in water and wine, then roasted and finely chopped together with ginger, sour fruit juice, saffron and cumin. Nowadays cumin is one of the ingredients of curry-powder. By itself it is also a popular seasoning in Indonesian cookery and is likewise commonly used in Latin America and north Africa.

This is how the spice is sold on the market, the seeds being removed from the capsules just before use. These seeds have a sweetish, but spicy flavour. They are often supplied to shops in powdered form, which is quite unsuitable for the aroma is rapidly lost.

Harvested rhizomes are washed, then boiling water is poured over them and after that they are dried by the heat of the sun. During this process the pigment spreads to the surrounding tissues, giving the entire rhizome the colour by which it is judged on the market and the rhizome hardens so that it can be ground to a fine powder. Orange milk-cup is one of the most piquant of all mushrooms. Up until the middle of this century it was no problem to make for the young spruce woods in autumn, crawl under the bottom branches and gather the glossy orange caps growing all around.

Apollo, the sun god of the Greeks and Romans, regarded as the perfection of masculine beauty, was depicted with a laurel wreath on his head. Caesar wore such a wreath on his triumphal marches, and modern-day winners of grand prix races are likewise honoured.

Besides essential oil (as much as 2%) the berries contain a bitter-tasting mixture of tannins, resins and other organic acids, which gives them their characteristic woodland aroma and spicy bitter flavour. It is perhaps for this reason that juniper was a popular flavouring with huntsmen as an essential in preparing game.

Garden cress, native to north Africa and western Asia, is an annual herb about 60 cm (2 ft) high. It was one of the kitchen herbs known to the Romans and it was they who introduced it to the rest of Europe. Until recently, however, it remained a forgotten herb of the past, and only occasionally is it found growing wild in waste places.

It did not attract renewed interest until after the Second World War but now it is common to grow the young plants in the home throughout the year. It is especially welcome when there are not many fresh greens to be had to make an aromatic salad that stimulates the appetite and is rich in Vitamin C. Cress may also be used to flavour other salads and also as a garnish for cold dishes and with cheese. It is generally not mixed with other seasonings and is used fresh, because cooking results in the loss of vitamins as well of the pleasant, mildly pungent flavour, which is replaced by an unpleasant odour. Young plants may be obtained quickly by sowing the seeds in dishes in soil, or simply on a piece of wet cotton or flannel on a plate.

Common juniper is distributed throughout practically the whole of the northern hemisphere from lowlands high up into the mountains. Propagation is by means of seeds, which germinate only after being exposed to frost. The fruits are harvested by hand. Gloves should be worn when doing this to prevent the prickly needles damaging the hands. The harvested berries are dried in thin layers in a shaded, well-ventilated spot at a temperature not exceeding 35C (95F) for otherwise they lose their potency.

The commonest method of preserving herbs is by drying, apart from a few exceptions, accompanying the colour plates of the individual species. There is no need to point out that even the most carefully dried herbs cannot compare with fresh herbs and so it is recommended to use fresh herbs whenever possible.

Otherwise the general rule is that the more rapidly herbs are dried and the lower the temperature during the drying process the better their quality. If you wish to dry herbs at home spread them out in thin layers on rust-free, fine-mesh chicken wire or muslin-covered frames placed in a dry, well-ventilated place where the temperature does not rise above 30C (86F). Best-quality dried herbs are obtained by freeze-drying, which requires complex equipment and is a method that is being increasingly used commercially.

Many herb mixtures are made up for specific uses. Listed below are a few examples. The evolution of the art of cookery did not follow the same course in all places.

Another herb mixture is the very hot sauce or paste from Mexico called tabasco. It is made by cooking fresh chillis together with salt, vinegar, sugar, garlic and other spices. Similar pastes called chilli sambala ranging from mild to very hot are used in Indian cookery. Fresh chillis are also used to make a very tasty Indian chutney, consisting of a paste made of crushed chillis, coconut and dried coriander leaves plus salt and lemon juice.

Another ground mixture which is a basic ingredient in preparing Chinese and Vietnamese foods is the 'five spices mixture'. This is a very delicate blend of equal parts of Chinese pepper (the fruits of Xanthoxylum piperitum), star anise, Chinese cinnamon, cloves and fennel. In the Far East it is widely used for seasoning pork dishes. Sauces and pastes are also herb mixtures, first and foremost of these being ketchup, which likewise originated in the Far East and was introduced to Europe in the late 17th century. Ketchup (ke-tsiap in Chinese) was originally the name for a salt solution used to pickle fish and for fermented fish extracts, whereas today it is applied to a wide variety of spicy salt extracts. In old cookbooks one will find many long-forgotten recipes for different kinds of ketchup.

Nowadays there is no need to prepare and bottle it at home when there is such a wide range to choose from on the market. Two of the most popular are tomato ketchup (made of tomatoes flavoured with onion, salt, sugar and spices) and mushroom ketchup (made of meadow mushrooms that are similarly flavoured).

Easy Method of Propagating Shrubs

The larger seeds of such shrubs as hazel, cornelian cherry, dogwood, wayfaring tree, medlar, blackthorn, bladdernut, spindle tree, etc., which take longer to germinate, should be sown directly in the autumn or else stratified for the winter and sown the following spring. The advantage of stratifying is that birds and rodents do not have access to the seed bed or frame during the winter. Also a good protective measure against birds and the like is to sprinkle the dampened seeds with red lead before sowing.

If the seedlings are too densely planted in the pot they should be pricked out some 2-3 centimetres apart as soon as the primary leaves appear and the root has not yet I ranched, being left thus until the following spring, when they are then transferred to the bed.

Vegetative reproduction is a method commonly used in the propagation of shrubs because most species produce prolific shoots or root suckers. As a rule this method yields plants for setting out in permanent quarters in a shorter time and also makes it possible to propagate shrubs that do not set seeds. It is the only method that ensures that the new plants shall be true to type. Vegetative reproduction includes propagation by division, layering, cuttings, grafting and budding.

Some seeds, even though stratified, will not germinate until the spring of the second year, e.g. the cornelian cherry, sometimes also the bladdernut, dogwood, wayfaring tree, English holly, staghorn sumach, etc. Such seeds should be stratified another year and in spring the pots in which they are stored should be put out in a shady spot and sunk in peat halfway to their rims, the peat being watered regularly to keep the substratum and seeds from drying out. In spring the seeds are sown either into a frame or in pots filled with a mixture of equal parts loam, peat and sand.

The seeds should be covered with a layer of soil one to two times their own thickness. For instance rhododendron seeds should be covered with a layer about 1 mm thick, those of the golden rain with a 5 mm layer, the bladdernut with a 10 mm layer, etc. The best temperature for seed germination is 16C - 20C. The seeds must be kept moist at all times, preferably with a fine rose can so that they are not washed out.

If the offshoot has an insufficiently developed root system it is advisable to plant it in a nursery bed and cut the top back hard to allow it to recover and grow.

Nutmeg is an evergreen tree growing up to 15 m (50 ft) high. Like clove it is a native of the Molucca Islands and the history of this culinary herb is very similar, except that it reached Europe at an even later date - not until the 16th century. For this we can be grateful to the Arabian navigators of that day who not only knew how to sail safely across the Arabian Sea but also had the necessary commercial contacts in India and the Far East.

They generally grow in clumps and often form fairy rings which can measure as much as several metres in diameter. Whole mushrooms are easily dried; when reconstituted they rapidly regain their original form and taste like fresh mushrooms. Dried mushrooms may be stored in air-tight containers for several years.

The fruits of the tree, one-seeded berries slightly resembling a peach, yield two spices: nutmeg and mace. Nutmeg (1) is the seed without the hard outer seed coat, whereas mace is the dried, fleshy, flat aril (2) which encloses the seed and extends beyond it in up to fifteen narrow strips. The fresh aril is a lovely red, changing to orange when it dries.

Mint tea, which does not need to be sweetened, is very tasty and healthy. It promotes the secretion of gastric juices and bile thus aiding digestion and lessening flatulence. Mint thus combines properties that are not only satisfying to the palate but of medicinal value as well. Britain's classic mint sauce, served with lamb, however, is not made from peppermint but from spearmint (M. spicata), whose essential oil is also used in making chewing gum.

The nutmeg is dioecious and one male tree is planted to pollinate every 20 female trees. It produces flowers and fruits in succession throughout the year. A single tree yields as many as 2,000 fruits, which are gathered into baskets attached to long bamboo poles.

Peppermint is a perennial herb, up to 1 m (3 ft) high, grown throughout Europe in a number of forms. These range from those with all-green leaves to forms with red stems and undersides of the leaves. Leaves are collected at the beginning of the flowering period and dried immediately as rapidly as possible in a warm airy place.

The rock currant is a thornless shrub of upright habit growing to a height of 1.5-2 m. The stems are reddish brown with bark that tends to peel; the buds are 'dark brown, ovate. The reddish flowers appear at the end of May, the red, slightly sour berries in drooping clusters ripen in August and the seeds are dispersed by birds.

Widespread throughout most of Europe from the Pyrenees to the Caucasus, it extends northward to latitude 63 North in southern Scandinavia. In central Europe it grows in lowland and hilly country at the margins of forests or in broadleaved woods. In the mountains it is found at elevations as high as 800-1000 m. It is especially plentiful on rocky slopes. It is widely cultivated for its sweet fruit and many large-berried varieties have been bred.

This is a valuable, evergreen ornamental shrub, widely cultivated in the parks of western, central and eastern Europe. It is sufficiently resistant to frost even in northern Germany, being damaged by spring frosts only if planted in sunny situations. It grows best in partial shade and does well even in drier situations. It is readily propagated by means of seeds or more usually by root suckers.

In the vicinity of housing developments and cemeteries it can he found growing semi-naturalized in hedgerows and woods. In parks it is planted as an evergreen ground cover and to form low evergreen hedges; it is also planted for game cover. The mountain currant is a thornless shrub of upright habit growing to a height of 1-2.5 in. The stems are yellow-brown with bark that tends to crack. The buds are longish ovate, pointed and coloured light brown. The flowers appear in May.

In parks it is planted either as a solitary specimen or in taller hedges and shrubbery. It tolerates moderate shade and does not require much soil moisture. In locations subject to frost and in severe winters it tends to be partially damaged by frost.

It grows in central and southern Europe, extending northward as far as the Baltic Sea to Leningrad and southern Finland and Sweden. Requiring partial shade, it grows in damp, rocky situations in forests from hilly country to high mountain elevations above 1000 m, but will grow in poorer and drier soils. Because it stands up well to pruning it is used in gardens and parks to form low hedges and shrubbery borders. It is well propagated both by means of seeds and winter and summer cuttings.

The pH scale is a scale of value for the itogree of acidity or alkalinity of a soil. Soils below 7 are regarded as being acid, those above 7 as alkaline. A pH value of 7 indicates a neutral soil and an ideal garden reading is 6.5. Below 6 on the agile the extreme acidity of the soil makes it sai:able only for acid-loving plants such as lithers and rhododendrons. A reading above 8 means that the soil is so alkaline that it will support few plants, due to essential foods being 'locked up' in the soil. However certain plants, such as carnations, sweet peas and onions, do prefer alkaline conditions.

The arrival of children would impose many new demands, from pram-standing space to soft play areas and tricycle runs. With a growing family a bigger area of the garden might be devoted to vegetables, with a large terrace space for outdoor activities and family meals.

As children leave home the garden area should become quieter and parents should have more time to spend in it. They may concentrate more on the plants themselves, possibly with special interests developing such as roses or a greenhouse. However, what can be looked after with ease at fifty becomes something of a chore at seventy.

Digging should be done in small spadefuls at a time otherwise the task can be backbreaking. The roots of persistent weeds, such as couch grass, bindweed, dock, thistles or nettles, should be removed and later burned. When turning over a large area the best method is to dig in trenches, working with the last trench in front of you. Digging to the depth of a spade is usually sufficient but with a very heavy clay soil, or for a large vegetable patch, it may be necessary to turn over the soil to two spade-depths, known as double digging. Apart from the extra effort involved, double digging is also more complicated because it goes down to the second layer, the subsoil. It is important to keep the two layers separate, so the topsoil should be lifted out of the trench and kept aside while the subsoil is broken up and turned over. Add any organic materials at this stage, forking them in well with the subsoil.

The addition of sufficient organic material, in the form of animal manure or vegetable compost, should cure the deficiencies of an infertile soil. In its decayed form it is known as humus and one way in which humus aids fertility is by storing nitrogen. The bacteria in the soil convert nitrogen into ammonia and this essential nutrient is released to the plant roots in the form of nitrates. Humus also absorbs and holds water so that the plant roots have time to take it up.

Between topsoil and parent bed rock there may be many layers of stone and gravel, but the layer immediately beneath the topsoil is generally the subsoil. Its depth varies according to the hardness of the underlying rock and the amount of erosion it has suffered. The colour and texture of subsoil are usually different from those of the topsoil because it is in a transitional stage, without humus or organic material. For this reason, it is not a growing medium.

Chervil is an annual herb growing up to 70 cm (2 ft 4 in). It is native to the Caucasus and western Asia and was used for seasoning food by the ancient Romans, who during their military campaigns introduced it to many European countries including the British Isles.

The flower heads, which have a spicy aroma and pleasant, slightly bitter taste, were originally used in the treatment of various diseases, including jaundice and diseases of the liver as well as migraine. Chamomile tea is a time- honoured tonic with a pleasant taste that aids digestion.

The parts used primarily for seasoning are the strongly aromatic and slightly bitter seeds (achenes), which are grown and harvested for this purpose in France, India and the USA. The aohenes, slightly reminiscent of the fruit of anise, are ground and combined with common salt for use as celery salt in seasoning foods. Some celery salts also include the ground root or foliage. Celery salt is used as seasoning for fish dishes, soups, vegetables and croquettes.

Roman chamomile is native to the Mediterranean region but nowadays it grows wild in western Europe, including the British Isles, and is cultivated in Belgium, France and England. The simplest and most reliable method of propagation is by splitting up older clumps in spring, because the flowers are often sterile (do not produce seeds).

This should be a shaded spot for chervil does not tolerate sun-baked locations. To ensure a constant supply of foliage, cut out the flower stalks, for otherwise chervil dries up and dies after flowering.

If you do not have a garden chervil can be einilly grown in a pot or windowbox.

Burnet Rose

The Burnet rose is an upright shrub reaching 0.7-2 m in height. The shoots arc densely covered with thin, straight thorns and needle-like bristles. The fairly large flowers bloom in May and June. The rounded blackish hips, about 1 cm across, with erect, persistent sepals at the tips, ripen in September.

Cultivated varieties bear fruits from 5 to 11 cm across. These are either pear-shaped - C. o. pyriformis or apple-shaped - C. o. maliformis and contain a large number of brown seeds measuring 4-6 mm.

The medlar is a broad-spreading shrub or small tree, 3-6 m in height. The stem may be as much as 20 cm in diameter. The shoots are felted grey- brown, older branches are grey and covered with short, solitary spines. The fruits are apple-shaped, 3 cm across, flattened at the top and terminated by long sepals. When ripe, they turn brown and contain 5 hard angular seeds.

A native of the Far East, it grows from Kamchatka to Japan, Korea and northern China. It is most plentiful in coastal areas in river valleys in sandy situations.

They are rich in Vitamin C, have a pleasant aromatic scent, and can be used in making preserves. The ovary contains a large number of brown, apple-pip-like seeds. This shrub is a native of the Shantung Province in China but has been cultivated in Japan for centuries. It is widely grown in the parks and gardens of central and western Europe for its lovely flowers.

It also stands up well to temperatures of minus 20C and grows on drier soils ; however, it requires a sunny aspect to produce a profusion of flowers. It is readily propagated by means of seeds and also throws up root suckers. Solitary specimens are very ornamental but it is equally well suited for the formation of thick thorny hedges.

Formal Gardnes

The English garden as we know it today owes most to two Victorians, William Robinson and Gertrude Jekyll, and the influence of their ideas. William Robinson was greatly influenced by having seen plants growing naturally in alpine meadows on his travels abroad.

The main historical contribution of Germany has been a numerical one- in the sixteenth century there were more gardens in Germany than in any other country in Europe-and a certain exaggeration of the elements in any style they adopted. The French formal style of gardening also flourished in the sandy soil of Holland, on a smaller and less sophisticated scale but with more emphasis on hedges, fantastic topiary and decorative planting. Their box-edged formal beds were tilled with tulips in the spring, brought hack from the Middle East. The Dutch were responsible, through their trading and through their rise as a colonial power, for the introduction of much imported plant material- from China, America, South Africa and many other countries. They introduced the lilac, the pelargonium and the chrysanthemum into Europe and popularized tulips and many other bulbs.

The style of this new movement spread all over Europe. In Germany, as in England, the earlier grand formal gardens were actually destroyed to make way for the new landscaped parks. The French, however. instead of destroying their formal heritage, simply set a pastoral landscape alongside or within the formal garden.

One of the first gardens in the grand formal style was at Hampton Court Palace, began in England. There was a general return to a classical and geometric layout but it was distinguished by cluttered ornamentation and over-patterned, brightly coloured flower beds. The villa garden really came into its own in the second half of the nineteenth century with the rapid growth of urban, industrial civilization.

An emergent middle class began to move out into the suburbs or even the country, which meant that many more people had gardens of their own and an interest in gardening greatly increased.

During the eighteenth century a revolution took place in England, influenced by Niters, landscape painters and philosophers, all of whom began to react against the artificiality of formal gardens. Literary men such as Addison, Steele and Pope theorized about the curved line and the irregularity of nature, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's idea of the romantic natural garden also tied in with the new movement.

Anise

The coastal region in south-west India known as the Malabar Coast was originally called Malichabar. The name is derived from the Sanskrit word `malicha', meaning pepper and the Arabian word 'bar', meaning land, hence pepper land. This relatively narrow coastal belt is the original home of the pepper plant, a climbing shrub growing to a height of 6 m (20 ft).

Used as a flavouring are the fragrant, small, hard, greyish-brown, double achenes which have a pleasant sweetish taste. The aroma is due to the presence of an essential oil containing anethol. It is used as a cough medicine, in lozenges, and in flavouring liqueurs, most typical being anisette. Anise is a characteristic flavouring for sweet dishes, cookies and coffee-cakes. It is also added to plum preserves and to pickled gherkins.

It is raised on plantations from offshoots that climb up poles up to 4 m (13 ft) high. Newly planted plants do not begin to bear fruit until the third year and produce their maximum yields (up to 3.5 kg [8 lb] of berries on a single plant) at the age of 7 to 9 years.

They are used only fresh to flavour salads, vegetable soups and sauces. They may also be used as a garnish for cold-dishes. They are particularly good as an ingredient of fine herb mixtures, for flavouring mayonnaises, boiled vegetables and fish. They may be used together with chervil, tarragon, parsley, chives and the like.

The unripe berries are dried in the sun, which can then be easily removed. The during which process they become black and cleaned, husked, ripe seeds yield the white wrinkled, and then graded according to pepper of commerce, which is more size; this is the black pepper of commerce which is aromatic but not as pungent. Unripe green.

Saxifrage can be plant in any free space in your garden. You can grow saxifrage in your kitchen garden and use it as a spice in your cooking. All it needs is a sunny location and not too much moisture. It may be propagated by means of seeds (achenes), or by the division of older clumps.

Hop Herb

The name hyssop was given to a number of different plants in olden times. The name itself tells us why this happened. It is derived from the Greek words 'hys', meaning pig, and `ops', meaning face. Many plants of the Lamiaceae (Labiatae) family have flowers that resemble a pig's snout.

Hyssop is native to the Mediterranean region and central Asia and was introduced to central Europe in the 10th century by the Benedictine monks. In medieval times it was a popular kitchen herb, its leaves being used in soups, pickled vegetables, meat pts and poultry stuffings.

It is used to this day in European cookery for its sweet smell reminiscent of camphor for flavouring vegetable soups, salads, sauces and meat dishes, including game. Hyssop is also a medicinal plant used to aid digestion and to limit sweating, for which reason it is apparently, used in the Orient in preparing the slightly alcoholic beverage called sherbet.

Hops are a dioecious plant with sterns which twine in a clockwise direction. Only the female plants are cultivated, however, and if any male plants are found in the vicinity of hop fields they must be destroyed to prevent pollination and the development of fruits which would spoil the crop. Hops are raised in fields where they climb up a system of wires and poles to a height of 10 in (33 ft).

Star anise is sold in shops both whole and ground, but it is used for flavouring only in powdered form, like anise, chiefly in sweet dishes and coffee-cakes, in plum and pear compotes, and to flavour candies. It is also an ingredient of ground spice mixtures for flavouring pured fruits and tarts. It is a typical spice of Chinese cookery, used chiefly with young pork and duck, and is an ingredient of soy sauce. It is also used to flavour aromatic liqueurs such as anisette.

Star anise is grown not only for its fruits (1) and the spice they yield but also for the lovely reddish wood prized by cabinet makers, joiners and turners. The seeds (2) are sown in nurseries and the young plants grown in plantations or in avenues alongside highways.

Cocoa

Tansy, a perennial herb up to 1 m (3 ft) high, is native to Europe where it is widely distributed. Its Latin name is derived from the Greek word `athanasia', meaning immortality. It was very popular in the Middle Ages.

As a flavouring, however, rowan- berries continue to be neglected. Perhaps because in this overly-civilized world where we can purchase everything packaged and ready-made we have forgotten to look about us and make the most of nature's bounty, of the fruits which are not found on the market but are plentiful in the wild.

Cocoa was important in Mexico among the Aztecs, who, though they did not cultivate the tree, made a chocolate drink from the beans which they flavoured with vanilla and drank hot. Introduced from Mexico to the tropical regions of the Old World in the 17th century, cocoa is nowadays not only a universal delicacy but also a high-caloric and stimulating beverage (it contains caffeine the same as coffee and tea).

It was also believed to banish 'bad humours' caused by a lengthy diet of salt fish. The highly aromatic, rather unpleasant-tasting foliage was used to disguise the strong taste of game and mutton and make it more palatable.

The small, oblong, cucumber-shaped fruits or pods (1) contain several rows of seeds or cacao beans (2). These are sweated (fermented), washed, dried and exported. The final stage of processing that gives us cocoa and cocoa butter is done industrially (involving hulling, roasting and grinding).

The fruits are eaten by birds, chiefly starlings and blackbirds, a fact made use of by fowlers who used to capture them on the tree; the Latin name of the species is derived from `avis capere', meaning to catch birds. The rowan is not harmed by the birds; on the contrary, it benefits because the birds disperse the seeds, which they cannot digest and thus pass out with their faeces, thereby spreading the species

Sweet Marjoram

The original form of the herb of lovage is the closely related species L. persicum which grows wild in the hills of southern Iran. It was known to the ancient Greeks and Romans, hence the generic name, derived from the Latin word `ligusticum' because it grew in abundance in Liguria, a region in northwestern Italy.

The first European botanist to describe the plant was Mattioli. He named it `mala insana', meaning unhealthy fruit, and for a long time it was considered poisonous. In consequence it was not eaten until the 19th century.

As a plant of the Mediterranean region marjoram was known to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, who used it not only to flavour food but also prized it as a miraculous herb with the power of healing practically all diseases, especially colds and chills.

Tomato is a perennial herb but is grown as an annual. It is a creeping plant and so is trained up low supports to keep the fruits clean. The method of raising tomatoes has been worked out to the minutest detail and enables very high yields to be obtained (depending on the climate). Though the tomato's use in Europe is fairly recent, this universal fruit, used as a vegetable, salad, flavouring and food colouring, rapidly became one of the most widespread commercial crops in the world. Intensive breeding led to the development of numerous cultivated forms of different shapes, colours and flavours.

Lovage is a large perennial herb up to 2 m (6 ft) high with a fleshy rhizome and long, branching roots. It grows best in moist deep soil. It may be propagated by seeds, but for the herb garden a single offset detached from the parent plant will suffice.

Therefore, do not always judge tomatoes by the way they look; those with the superior flavour are not always the best looking

The importance of colour in gardening cannot be over 9 stated. When the colours we see are harmonious and right, we feel happy or contented; when the reverse is the case, we feel unhappy or uncomfortable. As gardeners we can control the colours we have around us, and. by the skilful use of different plants, we can achieve different effects at will.

The overall shape and form of every plant must be taken into account. for they will largely determine the final effect of the planting, particularly the way it appears in winter. Height and spread can be used to advantage when you want to provide sentinel effects in borders or to highlight a gateway or path.

The white-variegated foliage of Cornus alba Tlegantissima' or the gold leaves of Cornus alba `Spathii' can also be used to bring alive a gloomy area, and the effect can be heightened when planted with the purple foliage of Berberis thunbergli f. atropurpurea (barberry) or one of its varieties.

In addition to the pleasures that colour and scent bring us, we should not forget that we can include in our gardens phints that will attract butterflies and other beneficial insects. In autumn moths are attracted by blue flowers, and Ceanothus (Californian lilac) and Caryopteris (blue spiraea) are often covered by moths in their endless search for nectar.

Silver and grey plants, such as santolina (cotton lavender) and artemisias. arc the ideal foil for most other colours, and they can be introduced to create buffer zones between strong colours, such as reds and blues, and to provide somewhere for the eye to rest.

Seasons change, and so do the sources of colour. In spring, summer and autumn there are so many that we tend to take them for granted. In autumn we look for the colour of the leaves and also of ripening fruits and berries, such as those of cotoneasters and pyracanthas (firethorn). The importance of evergreens, such as elaeagnus and photinias, in providing colour in winter is often overlooked, and fasminum (winter jasmine) offers yellow winter flowers.

Junior Golf Club Set

If you like to play golf, your children are probably going to want to try playing sometime soon. Children always want to copy their moms and dads, and that means they are going to find interest in all of the things that they see their parents doing. If the child's parents play golf, the children are going to show some interest in it. You can always take them to the putt putt range, but they are going to want to try the real thing. Start out by getting them a junior golf club set and then go from there.

When you first start your children out, you want to take them to a store, to get their junior golf club set. Make sure that they sell all types of junior golf equipment. The reason for this is that all children are different heights, obviously, and they all need different lengths. You can make sure they are getting clubs for their junior golf club set that fits their size so they can learn well. If they have the wrong sizes, they are not going to learn a good and natural swing, and that can mean they never adjust right as they grown. That can lead to frustration and a lack of interest in golf later on.

When my husband first got a junior golf clubs for my youngest daughter, he bought them one golf club at a time. This is something that many moms and dads can do, especially if money is an issue. We got her a golf bag that was just her size, and then bought her just one club. The driver was the obvious choice as the first addition to the junior golf club set that she wanted so badly. That meant she had a bag like daddy, and could go learn to drive first. They went to the driving range together and were both very happy.

If this is something you would like to do for a junior golf club set, you can then do what my husband did next. He slowly bought her one club at a time, teaching her what it was and how to use it as they went along playing the game. She only has four at this present time, but she is getting good with each of them. She is still young, but is very proud of her junior golf clubs and cant wait to make more of it. However, the problem is now that she is getting a little bigger and we may have to start all over again with a longer set of golf clubs.

You will find that this will be a problem for you when getting junior golf clubs also. If you have more than one child, you can simply pass them down the line. If you have just one, like we do, you may have to find a way to see what you can sell when you have to move up more sizes. If you dont care much about the price, you can always donate the junior golf club set that your child has outgrown to programs locally that get children involved in sports and physical education.

What Influence the Plant in the Garden?

The factors that most influence the ways in which a plant develops in a garden are the plant's hardiness, and the site and the aspect of the garden - that is, the amount of shade and the possibility of physical damage by wind if no support is provided.

First, draw up a simple scale plan of the garden or border to be planted. On this outline plan draw circles to represent plants to be planted. At the back large circles will show where large plants will go, medium sized circles will go in the centre, and small ones at the front. Make sure that the circles are drawn to scale and that they cover the whole of the area of the plan to be planted.

Every plant needs to obtain a cocktail of nutrients from the soil. In many cases there are only very small amounts of each nutrient in any given area of soil, and even when the gardener adds extra fertilizer, the plant has to seek out these nutrients from a very large area.

All these factors affect the amount of time a plant is exposed to levels of cold that can cause damage to the stem, foliage or, less often, the roots. In the directory each entry includes a minimum temperature that can be tolerated by any plant. If a plant is particularly prone to damage by spring frosts - as are hydrangeas and pieris.

For a single plant dig a hole lm (about 3ft) across, first removing the topsoil and, if necessary, turf to a depth of 25cm (10in) and storing this on a board alongside the hole. Then the lower 25cm (loin) - more if you can - should be dug over and a good quantity of organic material added. Add some more organic material to the removed topsoil before it is returned to the planting hole.

Take the heights, spreads and the colours of foliage and flowers inte account and group and position the plants according to their expected performance in the garden. The picture will slowly emerge, and you will be able to add the finishing touches, allowing each plant and its companions to have their own spaces. As a reminder, you may wish to make a note on the plan of details of cultivation, particularly pruning, to help you while the plants mature.

Sumach

The ancient Chinese dictionary Er-ya tells us that radishes were already being grown in China in the middle of the second millennium B.C.

The wild species are native to that land and the number of Chinese varieties is enormous. Even older, by a thousand years, are the inscriptions on a tablet of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, where the radish (surmaia) is listed together with various other vegetables. Either is was introduced from here to China or else the Chinese began cultivating it on their own, independent of the Egyptians. Radish is also mentioned by Dioscorides in connection with its use in medicine.

The fruits of sumach herb were used by the ancient Romans, who called the plant Syrian sumach, for the same purpose as lemons before the latter were introduced into cultivation. From Mattioli we know that the eastern peoples used the dried fruits of sumach herb in place of salt.

They are used sliced on bread and butter, chopped or grated in salads and as an accompaniment to cheeses and salamis. They arc best eaten raw. Radishes are wholesome, for besides mustard oil they contain Vitamins B and C and many mineral substances.

The radish is a rapidly growing annual herb. The seeds germinate as soon as they arc sown and in congenial conditions the radishes are ready for consumption within three weeks. However, they should be thinned to the proper spacing (about 4 cm [ 12 in] apart), because plants that arc too crowded tend to grow tall and flower instead of forming a fleshy root.

The same happens when radishes are sown in summer (they usually run to seed), which is why they should be grown in a shaded spot at that time of the year. The slower and longer their growth, the drier they become and the hotter their taste.

Oregano

The existence of olives as food is the result of sheer chance combined with a stroke of genius. Present-day olive trees are apparently descended from a wild tree of Greek origin. The first such individual must have been the result of a chance mutation, some time as far back as 3000 B.C., and all the olive trees raised nowadays are its offspring, multiplied by man.

In the first century B.C. the largest producer of olive oil was Italy, where the olive tree was introduced by the Greeks. Olives, as we know them today in the form used to flavour dishes typical of the Mediterranean region, were not known at that time.

Though a traditional flavouring of Italian cookery, oregano is widely used throughout Europe and is commonly available in shops. It is one of the most widely-used seasonings in Mexico, perhaps because it grows wild there too. It is generally used dried, even though the fresh herb has a more penetrating flavour. Even in the smallest garden a wide range of microclimatic conditions exists. These can be used to control the amount of sunlight, water and wind coming into contact with plants, which determines their health. For instance, the way plants are grouped creates a microclimate, since the proximity of one plant may reduce the water, sun and wind received by its neighbour.

A well planned garden should make the most of variations in the microclimate. The plants behind the pond and under the tree-Himalayan poppies, rhubarb, hostas and primula -all like shade and moisture; the fruit trees are trained up against the wall, since brick stores and re-radiates solar heat long after the sun has gone off the garden; and the vegetables are planted on a south-facing slope to catch the full benefit of the sun's rays.

Shade-loving plants tend to be the ones with relatively large leaves, since these become hotter than small leaves when exposed to sunlight. While plants and soil absorb heat from the sun during the day, at night they give off heat into the atmosphere. On cloudy nights, heat radiated from the ground is partly reflected back again, so that temperatures do not increase too rapidly. On clear winter nights, however, nearly all the heat is lost to space and the ground temperature falls rapidly until it is lower than that of the air. The soil then takes heat from the air at ground level, resulting in freezing.

The incidence of frost will be less under overhanging trees and covering the ground with materials such as straw or sacking will also help to reduce night-time heat loss. A free flow of air, ensuring that cooled air gets whipped away by the wind before its temperature drops too far, prevents the formation of frost pockets.

Although sufficient wind is therefore desirable to prevent frost developing, high wind speeds can result in the atmosphere trying to make more water evaporate from the leaves than can be supplied from the roots. This is known as water stress and it stunts the growth of plants. Of course, too much wind can also have a more directly disastrous effect by uprooting plants.

By contrast, the design shown on the right holds the eye within the garden, with the pool and fountain creating an internal point of interest garden. So the curved bed (in the right foreground of the picture) has been kept deliberately low to allow a view through to the neighbouring garden and the trees.

If you are starting from scratch you should plan the location of items such as the greenhouse, tool shed, oil tank, coal or log storage, compost and rubbish bins, so that some sort of amalgamation is achieved, rather than an ever increasing number of small structures dotted around the site.

A greenhouse naturally needs full sun, good access to it and preferably a hard surface area around it, as it soon becomes another centre of activity within the garden. if you can combine it with or site it next to the tool shed, or any other necessary small structure, so much the better. When wrongly sited, greenhouses can dominate the whole garden and, despite recent attempts to improve their appearance, they are seldom handsome structures. If the greenhouse cannot be a lean-to or an extension of the house, try to site the freestanding building, running east to west, to one side of the main view.

To give some indication of the amount of space which vegetables take up: an area of 84 sq m (300 sq ft) would provide a family of four with sufficient lettuces, runner beans, peas, carrots and turnips in summer, and with leeks, cabbages and sprouts in winter. But of course great pleasure can be obtained from growing your own produce, even if you do not have enough space to make the enterprise really economic, and the fresh taste of homegrown vegetables is reward in itself.

A space for any large vehicles to be parked, such as a boat or a caravan as well as a car, should be allowed for at this initial planning stage.

There are many varieties of lettuce worth growing and a few outdoor tomato plants in a sheltered place can be rewarding. Fruit bushes can be trained along a fence or grown against a wall, where they will benefit from the heat retained and gently released by the wall.

Many vegetables can be incorporated decoratively in the garden plan. Red cabbages look striking, runner beans can be grown up a fence, and artichoke plants are visually interesting and can be used to screen a compost heap, while marrows and courgettes are most attractive hanging over a wall from the edge of a raised bed. Raised beds look effective and can be worked into a terrace if space is limited; they are excellent for old people since they are far easier to work.

If we were given a choice of growing only one species from the large genus Alliurn the decision would be very difficult, but many persons would doubtless choose chives. Chives can be easily grown, not only in the garden but also in a windowbox or in a pot on the window sill.

Garlic was even considered to be a sacred plant and ancient Greeks and Romans, believing it to have invigorating properties, fed it to their armies during military campaigns. Patricians, however, disdained garlic, giving it instead to their slaves. Since time immemorial garlic has been a favourite food of the Jews. As the Old Testament tells us the Jews cried to Moses: 'We remember the fish, which we did cat in Egypt freely ... and the leeks and onions and garlic'.

All the upper parts of the plant are aromatic, but it is the tender feathery leaves that have the most delicate aroma and pleasantly sour flavour. The fruits and the entire, unopened flower heads are also used as flavouring, especially for pickling gherkins, cabbage and onions.

Dill is exceptionally good when combined with cream sauces and soups, cream cheese and butter, or with vinegar salad dressings. It is also used as a seasoning with raw vegetables, boiled meat and fish. A simple but tasty dish is boiled and buttered new potatoes or string beans with dill. As a rule it is not used with other herbs because of its distinctive aroma.

The flowers are arranged in loose umbels and are followed by small bulbs. Garlic is a perennial herb propagated by planting the separate cloves directly in the ground where they are to grow, either in autumn or early spring. Bulbs are dug up and harvested when the foliage begins to turn yellow and dry. A very suitable and decorative method of storing garlic is to braid the bulbs together and hang them up in a cool spot.

Dill may be stored for the winter by chopping the leaves and preserving them in salt or vinegar. It may also be dried, but this must be done rapidly and with care in an airy place at a temperature of not more than 30C (86F), otherwise the aromatic and extremely volatile essential oil will rapidly vaporize. This is also the reason why dill should be added to hot food just before serving. The dried herb should be stored in air-tight containers.

Caught up in the fast pace of the present day we often forget age-old culinary treats that made life pleasant for our ancestors. One of the most aromatic is the inconspicuous savory, recommended by Vergil to his countrymen.

The berries contain a deep red juice, hence the name Sambucus, derived from the Greek word `sambyx', meaning red colour. Both the flowers and fruits are used in cookery. The inflorescences are cut off as soon as they open, spread out on nets to wilt, the blooms are then stripped from the stalks and rapidly dried so they do not discolour.

Dried blooms should be stored in air-tight containers. During the growth period it is best to use the fresh flowers. These have a refreshing fragrance and for this reason were at one time used in Europe to improve the flavour of Moselle wines that were not up to par.

The leaves are very aromatic and may be used both fresh and dried. They are added, together with the flowers of elderberry, to wine to give it a nutmeg-like flavour, hence the German name Muskateller-Salbei. They are also used to flavour jams and jellies. Nowadays clary is grown in Europe mainly for the extraction of the essential oil which has a lavender-like fragrance and is used in perfumery. In cookery it is used for the same purposes as common sage, but is rarely found on the kitchen shelf.

Their chief attraction in cookery is their lovely red colour which dissolves well in water. In former times elderberries were used to colour wine, chiefly port. They are added in small amounts to apple and pear compotes. In some north European countries they are used to make a fruit soup, eaten with baked apples and dumplings or toasted bread. They are also the principal ingredient of an old English ketchup called poulac.

It is very suitable for growing in the herb garden. Propagation is by means of seeds sown outdoors where the plants are to grow in early spring. The non-woody flowering top parts of the plant are gathered. These are tied in bunches and dried in a well-ventilated spot at a temperature not exceeding 35C (95F). They should then be stored in air-tight containers

3. Many beginners do not pay enough attention to posture and technique. Some even develop bad habits from the start, which are difficult to correct later on in life. Do not fall into this trap and always spend time to perfect how to hold the violin, the bow and other techniques like proper chin rest posture.

4. Do not try to implement methods that promote short cuts to learning. These include taping the violin neck in order to help memorize the exact places where you should place your fingers on the strings to sound specific notes. You might end up developing an over reliance on them.

5. Take good care of your violin and accessories. There are some who believe that a spiritual connection can exist between a musician and his instrument. While it might sound unbelievable for some, you might start playing better on a violin that is well maintained and free from problems.

6. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. The same applies to becoming proficient in any instrument. Always retain your self belief and be positive about the results you will eventually get after hours of practice and determination. The violin can be tough to learn, but once you have done so the rewards are beautiful.
